College of Notre Dame The word 'Notre Dame' is derived from two French languages. Which translates to 'Our Lady' in English. Roman Catholics refer to 'Our Lady' as Mary, the mother of Jesus. Hence this Catholic run college is named after the noble lady. |
|||
The motto of the college is: Diligite Lumen Sapientiae, whose English translation is Love the Light of Wisdom. According to Catholicism, Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, is the symbol of wisdom. The word "wisdom" (Sapientiae) refers to the main purpose of the college being both the acquisition of knowledge and the source of knowledge. The word "light" (Lumen) refers to dispelling darkness and distinguishing between truth and falsehood. And the word "diligite" refers to the acquisition of knowledge with love.At the top of the emblem of the College of Notre Dame is an open book, with the capital Greek letter 'Alpha' (Α) on the left page and the capital 'Omega' (Ω) on the right page. Alpha-Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, respectively. By this it alludes simultaneously to the whole of wisdom and to a saying of Jesus in the Revelation chapter of the Bible. Besides, books are the vehicles of knowledge. Collectively these symbols express: All the knowledge gathered over the ages is stored in the book, signifying enlightenment. |

The watery river, moving boats, golden paddy fields and endless blue sky in the right field symbolize the location of the college in the heart of green Bangladesh. In the lower field is the symbol of the sannyas-sangha, a cross surmounted by two anchors placed crosswise.Symbolized by this symbol: Just as the death of Jesus Christ on the cross brought salvation to mankind, salvation is possible by clinging to the crucified Jesus as an anchor. The anchor is a symbol of hope. The light that radiates from the cross is a symbol of the light and greatness of Jesus. |
