George Raffalovich (10 December 1880 – 17 May 1958) was a journalist and novelist, known as a supporter of Ukrainian independence. He sometimes wrote under the pseudonym "Bedwin Sands".
Life
Raffalovich was born on 10 December 1880 in Cannes, France. His father's family were Ukrainian Jews.[1] He moved to the UK in about 1906,[2] and became a British citizen that year.[1] He published articles in support of Ukrainian independence, sometimes under the pseudonym "Bedwin Sands",[2][1] and is described in the Encyclopedia of Ukraine as "the best-informed observer of Ukrainian affairs in Great Britain in his day".[1] He was forced to leave the UK in 1915 under suspicion of treasonously supporting Germany.[3]
His fiction included some fantasy and early science fiction stories, including Planetary Journeys and Earthly Sketches (1908), and The Deuce and All (1910).[2] The former is described by The Oxford Companion to Edwardian Fiction as "mostly consist[ing] of affected parables".[4]
He died in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 17 May 1958.[1]
