Super Punch-Out!! (1994) is a cartoony boxing video game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System designed, developed, and published by Nintendo. The game features a dirty-blonde haired (that the player names) working his way up the WVBA (World Video Boxing Association) circuits, facing a series of colorful, fictional boxers up until a final fight with the undefeated, Nick Bruiser.
Bald Bull, Mr. Sandman and Super Macho Man all return from Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! while Piston Hurricane (with a new look) returns from Punch-Out!! and Bear Hugger and Dragon Chan return from Super Punch-Out!!
Gameplay
The game requires good reflexes in reaction to the computer-controlled boxers' moves, as the more advanced boxers give very little indication of their coming moves. Like the three games before it, Super Punch-Out!! incorporated enough variety to be a challenge to even the most experienced of players. However, players can learn the computer-controlled boxers'patterns of attack.
The opponents
The opponents the player has to face in the three boxing circuits are:
Minor Circuit
- Gabby Jay - the weakest boxer on the circuit, and in the game for that matter. Much like his trainer, Glass Joe, he's a perpetual loser.
- Bear Hugger - a morbidly obese Canadian, he's rendered immune to bodyshots except at a critical moment.
- Piston Hurricane - in essence a black version of Piston Honda, his ace in the hole is the Hurricane Rush, a fast series of jabs.
- Bald Bull - an Iranian whose most powerful manuever is a head-down charge, thus his name.
Major Circuit
- Bob Charlie - a take-off on Bob Marley, who has a powerful whirling punch.
- Dragon Chan - the standard kung-fu fighter, who breaks boxing rules by attacking with a kick. He can also regain strength through meditation.
- Masked Muscle - another parody, this time of a luchador. He cheats by spitting in one's eye.
- Mr. Sandman - a New Yorker, a returning character, and the user of the Big Apple Combo.
World Circuit
- Aran Ryan - an Irishman with the skills needed to counter your most powerful punches.
- Heike Kagero - your standard bishonen, he uses his long hair as a weapon.
- Mad Clown - an overweight Italian clown, he uses juggling balls as weapons.
- Super Macho Man - the third returning character, who incorporates his exercise routines into his attacks.
Special Circuit
- Narcis Prince
- Hoy Quarlow
- Rick Bruiser
- Nick Bruiser
Trivia
Gabby Jay was trained by Glass Joe, the first round wimp from both Punch-Out and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.
Other versions
This game was inspired by the 1984 arcade game Super Punch-Out!!, also by Nintendo.
