The Suzuki DR650 is a long standing model in Suzuki's lineup, introduced in 1990 as a replacement for the DR600 model. The DR is a dual-sport motorcycle single cylinderintended for use on both paved and unpaved roads.

History & Development

Thanks to a number of DR enthusiasts globally, comprehensive details regarding the history and development of this thumper is freely available.[1]

In brief, the first models introduced were the Djebel/Dakar and the RS that were both kick start. In 1991, the first electric start model was introduced, namely the DR600RSE. In 1992 the Djebel/Dakar model was replaced with the DR650R. This model also saw improvements in the exhaust system, a smaller tank and 8kg weight reduction.

In 1996 the DR650SE was introduced, replacing the previous models. The engine was radically redesigned, reducing its power but allowing for more smooth delivery. The bike's weight was also reduced by around 25kg. In 2002, the DR's styling was updated with Suzuki's offroad racing colours and graphics.

General Description

This motorcycle is heavier than specialized off-road dirt bikes, but it can handle most conditions when ridden carefully. Its counterbalanced, single cylinder, air/oil-cooled engine develops 43 peak bhp. It has a 13 liter (3.4 gallon) fuel tank. This motorcycle is commonly described as being useful for all types of motorcycling. Many owners regard the DR as an inexpensive adventure touring bike, adding saddle bags and modifications to make it more comfortable on long trips.
