From the most general perspective, evolution is usually the long internal process which changes stuctural properties of its carrier system. In this sense, we may observe that a system transforms itself in another one. In opposite to design and control processes an evolution is caused by natural forces. It may also relate to abstract systems, for example opinions, but an evolution is always not goal-oriented (the interpretation according to the systemic TOGA meta-theory,1994).
As contrasted with 'development', it can be the irreversible accumulation of historically acquired information. Development, in contrast, is made up of predictable directional changes.
For the reason of the existence of many types of systems and processes, the term evolution is used in many different contexts.
For example, evolution may refer to:
In biology
- Organic evolution is change in the heritable traits of a population over successive generations. It is reailized by the gens' mutation processes. It is also called natural selection.
Philosophy and spirituality
- Evolution (philosophy), the progressive development of the universe and consciousness over time
- Higher evolution, a spiritual concept concerning the transcendental progression of human consciousness
- Theistic evolution, beliefs holding that God creates through evolution, with variations as to the extent of intervention by God

- Stellar evolution, the development of stars
- Technological evolution, a science and technology studies theory developed by Czech philosopher Radovan Richta
- Time evolution, the change of state brought about by the passage of time for a system with internal state
- Evolution (journal), a bimonthly scientific journal which publishes new findings in evolutionary biology
- Beagle 2: Evolution, the proposed successor to the unsuccessful Beagle 2 Mars lander
Math
- Differential evolution, an evolutionary algorithm
- Evolute, in math, the set of all of the centers of curvature of a curve
