== Nazi affiliations ==

It is somewhat disingenuous to say that Nolde supported the Nazi Party "when it took power"; he had been a member of the party since the early 1920s and was one of Joseph Goebbels favourite painters, much to Hitler's annoyance. The relationships between the artistic avant garde and the political Right of the inter-war period is more complex than many people suppose and Nolde's relationship with, and commitment to, the Nazi Party illustrates this well.

Nazi affiliations

It is somewhat disingenuous to say that Nolde supported the Nazi Party "when it took power"; he had been a member of the party since the early 1920s and was one of Joseph Goebbels favourite painters, much to Hitler's annoyance. The relationships between the artistic avant garde and the political Right of the inter-war period is more complex than many people suppose and Nolde's relationship with, and commitment to, the Nazi Party illustrates this well.
