Charmbracelet World Tour: An Intimate Evening With Mariah Carey was Mariah Carey's fifth tour.
General Information About The Tour
In 2003, with sales of the Charmbracelet album selling poorly, Mariah decided to go on tour to help support it. Although Mariah had gone on tour before, the tour helped Mariah explore new facets of touring for the firs time. It became her firs ever theather tour with an emphasis on small intimate environments and a closeness with fans and the audience. The tour was originally touted for larger stadiums, but was changed at the last instance for Mariah to get closer to the fans (However, critics dismiss Mariah's reasoning and claim that it was just a disguise for the real change: poor ticket sales)
To make the tour even more personal, Mariah's official site www.mariahcarey.com put up an official poll asking fans to design the set list of the show. Unfortunately for the fans, Mariah decided to sing whatever she felt like singing anyway contrary to the online fan results. A new poll was placed asking fans to decidde one song on the tour and they were given a choice between, "Love Takes Time", "One Sweet Day", and "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)" Fans and critics cried foul play when "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)" won for almost every night of the tour, "One Sweet Day" won only a few times, and "Love Takes Time" never won.
Besides being her most personal tour to date, the tour also broke new records in being Mariah's biggest international tour ever and her longest tour ever. Previously critics had scoffed at Mariah's previous "international" tours, because she only went to Japan, a fewEuropean countries, and her native USA. Mariah shocked critics by going to countries where most artists don't even visit such as United Arab Emirates and Lebanon. As mentioned previously, the tour was also her longest ever with nearly 70 shows stretched over almost 8 months.
The tour also faced much controversy with Mariah's very sexual image. In various countries, Mariah was often critcized for her rauncy clothing and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, critics even tried to get her banned from the country! Nevertheless, Mariah managed to perform in the more conservative countries. She had to compromise her clothing during the shows in these countries though, and wore relatively less sexy clothes.
