Peraica has been an outspoken critic of corruption during his tenure on the Cook County Board. As a result, he has been attacked by corrupt politicians in both the Democratic and Republican Parties. In 2007, Cook County Commissioner Liz Gorman, an ally of now-indicted former Alderman Edward R. Vrdolyak, had a man arrested for leaving a harassing and vulgar message on her county office phone. The man was a former campaign worker for the Peraica campaign who left in October 2006 in order to work with Gorman ally Lee Roupas, the GOP Committeeman for Palos Township. The man was working for Lee Roupas at the time the offensive phone calls were made. Gorman had full knowledge of this and persisted in lying to the police and the media claiming the man worked for Peraica. In 2008, a federal appeals court upheld a $4.5 milion verdict in favor of Daimler Chrysler against Gorman and her husband Gerald. Complicating matters further in this matter is the fact that Vrdolyak loaned the Gormans more than $700,000 to help finance their now bankrupted Dodge dealership. Further action may be taken by the authorities since the Gormans lied under oath and helped cause the bankruptcy by transfering funds from the business to Liz Gorman's campaign fund. |

Anthony J. "Tony" Peraica (born April 14 1957) is the Cook County Commissioner for the 16th district, and was the Republican nominee for Cook County Board President. Tony Peraica is currently the Lyons Township Republican Committeeman, a post he has held since 2002. [1] Peraica (a Roman Catholic), his wife Nilofar Peraica (a Sunni Muslim), and their two children Marko and Anisa live in Riverside, Illinois.
Peraica was born in Croatia in 1957, and was orphaned at the age of 11. He came to the United States when he was 13. He lived in Bridgeport, a neighborhood in Chicago, with his aunt and uncle. He attended the University of Illinois at Chicago,[2] where he earned his B.A. in political science. He went on to earn his J.D. from the John Marshall Law School. He was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1984, and continues to work as a lawyer in private practice at Anthony J. Peraica & Associates.
On August 14, 2007, Peraica announced his candidacy for Cook County State's Attorney. Peraica will face two challengers from both the Democratic and Green Party in November 2008's general election. The two challengers are assistant state's attorney Anita Alvarez, and the Green Party's Thomas O'Brien. Alvarez is currently under fire for her ties to HDO and a largely unproductive tenure as head of the State's Attorney's Public Corruption Unit. O'Brien is rumored to be a stalking horse candidate for Alvarez. Currently Ms. Alvarez is attempting to recruit yet another male candidate for the State's Attorney's race in hopes of repeating her primary election victory over a crowded field of male candidates.
