King Egbert was the son of Ealhmund, King of [[Kent]]. He was born in about 770AD, and became King of [[Wessex]] in [[802]]. In about 825, he achieved supremacy over the rulers of the other English kingdoms, and in 829, became King of [[Mercia]]. He married Redburga, a Frankish princess (possibly a sister of the emperor [[Charlemagne]]), and had two sons and a daughter. Egbert died in about 839, and was buried at [[Winchester]].
