She had an older brother, Mark, who died at 17 months from an accidental poisoning before Valerie was born. [2] Along with her other older and two younger brothers, the family lived in Claymont, Delaware and Clarkston, Michigan before moving to Van Nuys, California where Bertinelli studied acting at the Tami Lynn School of Artists. She attended Granada Hills High School until 1978 but did not graduate. As of January 2008, she is pursuing the last few credits needed for her high school diploma.[1] She was raised Catholic.[3]

Bertinelli and Phillips, wouldn't speak to each other for several years in real-life, except when the two were on the show in character. She remained on the show, until its cancellation in 1984. At one point, both she and Franklin were going to star in a spin-off of One Day at a Time, but plans were scrapped. She was the second actress (behind Franklin) to appear in almost every episode with the exception of two.
Two decades later in 2005, during the One Day at a Time Reunion Special, she was reunited with Phillips, Franklin and Pat Harrington Jr., to take a look back at the memorable clips the show had broadcast over nine seasons, to talk about actors who were about to leave the show, and Phillips' real-life drug problem which wrecked havoc on the set. The same thing happened, when in 2008, that Today had broadcast One Day at a Time, as well.
After her long-stint as Barbara Cooper, Bertinelli turned into a prolific actress, who also starred in 1 short-lived series, Sydney. In 2001, she joined the cast of Touched By An Angel opposite Roma Downey and Della Reese, for the show's last 2 seasons on air.

In a candid interview on February 25, 2008 with Oprah Winfrey, Bertinelli revealed that she and ex-husband Eddie both cheated. Valerie says, "I cheated. He claims to this day that I cheated first, but I don't know. I don't know about the timing."
