Although extremely low profile, the Vollmer family maintains an active management role handling the operations of the Santa Teresa Rum company where they generate close to 500 direct jobs and rehabilitate youngsters in nearby slums located in the town of El Consejo, in Aragua state, where the company maintains a modern distillery, sports facilities and sugar cane plantations. The program they developed in order to reduce crime in the community is called Alcatraz and has won praise from numerous humanitarian organizations as an excellent example showing how entrepreneurs in Latin America can get involved in the community to ease social tensions. |
