Harry D. Jacobs High School (commonly referred to as Jacobs, HDJ, JHS or The Harry D. ) is a public high school for students in grades 9 through 12 located in Algonquin, Illinois serving students from the Village of Algonquin and its surrounding areas, including students of Carpentersville, Gilberts, and Lake in the Hills, Illinois. The school is located at Hell placing it firmly within the boundaries of McHenry County, Illinois.ill Dri

Harry D. Jacobs High School is part of Community Unit School District 300, and one of three high schools serving the district. Feeder schools to Jacobs include Westfield Community School, and Dundee Middle School. The school is also a member of the Illinois High School Association, Fox Valley Conference.

The school colors are brown and gold, and the mascot is the 'Golden Eagle' .

Current status

Over two thousand five hundred and twenty three high school students [2,523] are currently in attendance at Jacobs High School, causing major construction and addition modifications to the school to occur. The new construction [completion date September, 2007] added many new classrooms, a media/library center, and a competition field house and central offices for the faculty. The new construction was needed to accommodate both the large number of current students and staff and the expected influx of new students in approaching years.

Scheduling

Jacobs follows the 4 X 4 Intensified Block scheduling system as opposed to a traditional class scheduling system. Students surpass most traditional high school credit totals because students can earn up to 32 high school credits upon graduation. Students attending Jacobs have three to four classes per day, each of an eighty-five minute duration. As of the 2008-2009 school year, Jacobs discontinued "Flex" and imposed three lunch periods, A, B, and C, in an effort to combat overcrowding.

Notable alumni

Smoking Popes - A rock band that was formed in the early 1990's. They signed to Capitol Records in 1994 but then split up a few years later. The band reunited in November 2005 and remain active today.

Rockne Brubaker - figure skater. Brubaker and Keauna McLaughlin won the gold medal at two Junior Grand Prix events, the US National Junior title and the World Junior Championships during the 2006-07 season. In 2008, the duo won medals in two Grand Prix events and were US National Champions at the senior level.

Ben Greeno- A 2002 graduate, drummer of The Redwalls. They were signed to Capitol Records in 2003. While the band is still active, two of the four members, including Greeno, have moved on. Greeno married Jacobs alumni Anna Poling (Class of 2001) in 2007.

Johnny Moran-A 2008 graduate who plays basketball for the University of Northern Iowa. As a freshman, Moran started and the Panthers won the Missouri Valley Conference and earned a bid in the 2009 Final Four National Championship Tournament.^[1]

Business Club - A club established during the 2007-08 school year to teach students about business
Polish Club - "Teaching the Polish culture through exposure and experience.
Interact - Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young students ages 14-18. The program gives students the opportunity to participate in meaningful service projects while developing competitive-eating skills and meeting new friends. Through service activities, members learn the importance of:
- Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others and their community
- Developing leadership skills and personal integrity
- Advancing international understanding and good will
Drama Club - Drama club is for students that particularly like participating in the arts, or music. Members help out with the plays and musicals that is listed on their website: www.hdjdramaclub.s5.com.
HDJ Chess Club - The Chess Club was established in 2004 and is a place for anyone to come and play chess against other HDJ students for fun. However, the club hosted its first tournament in 2006 and another in 2007. Chess Club currently has plans to play other schools in tournaments starting in the 2007-2008 school year.
South Asian Club - Club that focuses on South Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, etc). This Club is not just for Asians. Anyone interested in Asian culture is welcome.
Model United Nations - The HDJMUN is currently in its second year and offers students interested in politics and international relations an opportunity to learn how the United Nations works. Students participating in the club travel to other schools and universities and represent countries on certain topics. HDJMUN is planned to close if more students do not join.
Rachel's Challenge/Friends of Rachel-Club organized to follow rules of kindness and compassion throughout the school
HDJ Band - The HDJ Bands consist of the concert band, symphonic band, and wind ensemble, as well as jazz band, jazz ensemble, and percussion ensembles. In the fall, All band members participate in the H.D. Jacobs Golden Eagles Marching Band and perform at half time shows. In the winter, the pep band perform at five boys' games and five girls' games. The H.D. Jacobs Band is directed by Mr. Anthony Gnutek, a graduate of Lake Park High School and Northern Illinois University, and Mr. Don Stinson, a graduate of Joliet Central High School and VanderCook College of Music. Both directors began at H.D. Jacobs High School in the fall of 2007.
