Shane Murphy is a 33-year-old American Chief Mate employed by Maersk. He was Chief Mate of the MV Maersk Alabama and took over as Master for Captain Richard Phillips during the attempted hijacking attempt in April 2009. He is a 2001 graduate of Massachusetts Maritime Academy.[1] He participated in the crews actions which prevented the takeover of the ship during which Captain Richard Phillips was captured.[2]
