Tomoyo Daidouji (大道寺 知世, Daidōji Tomoyo) is a fictional character, the best friend of the heroine of Clamp's manga series Cardcaptor Sakura. In the English anime adaptation of the series, Cardcaptors, her name is changed to Madison Taylor. For all Japanese-language productions of the anime (including movies, audio CDs, and video games), Tomoyo is voiced by Junko Iwao. For English-language productions, she is voiced by Maggie Blue O'Hara through Cardcaptors and the first movie. She is voiced in the second movie by Michelle Ruff.
Creation and conception
Tomoyo's character design for the manga was originally developed by Clamp.
In Cardcaptors, Tomoyo's name is changed to Madison Taylor, a common english name.
Character
Tomoyo is a ten-year-old who will shortly be a fourth-grader[citation needed] when the series begins living in the fictional town of Tomoeda in Japan,[1] near Tokyo[2] where she attends Tomoeda Elementary School. Tomoyo's best friend Sakura Kinomoto accidentally unleashes a deck of magical cards known as Clow Cards and is appointed by Cerberus to catch them all again. Tomoyo discovers Sakura's secret after capturing Sakura, flying with the use of The Fly card, on video tape. From then on, Tomoyo accompanies Sakura on all of her adventures and videotapes almost every card capture. Tomoyo insists that Sakura must wear "special clothes" during each card capture and begins providing her with the various costumes she wears during her captures.
Personality outline
Tomoyo is depicted as being mature, kind-hearted, and intelligent, and regularly speaking using more formal verb conjugations and expressions than normally seen in elementary students. She is a talented singer, and is shown performing in various school events. In the anime, her musical ability causes her to be targeted by both the Voice and Song cards.
Romantic Life
While Tomoyo is in love with Sakura, she notes that she is happy to be able to be with Sakura and does not require Sakura to love her back. Instead, she encourages Sakura's love for Yukito, and later becomes Syaoran Li's confidante and ally when he falls in love with Sakura.
Appearances in other media
In the first Cardcaptor Sakura film, Sakura wins a trip to Hong Kong and is accompanied by Tomoyo, Touya and Yukito. They meet Syaoran's family and encounter the spirit of a woman angry at Clow Reed who mistakenly calls Sakura to her because of her being the holder of the Clow Cards. In Cardcaptor Sakura Movie 2: The Sealed Card, Sakura learns that there is a 53rd card, the Sealed card which was created to balance the positive energy of the other cards. Sakura struggles to tell Syaoran that she loves him, as well as searching for the card. Tomoyo schemes with Meiling in an ttempt to get Sakura to admit her true feelings to Syaoran.
