The Palace Shield is the major cricket league for Preston and surrounding districts in Lancashire, England.

It recently celebrated its centenary, and is continuing to expand in size and improve in quality. There are 7 divisions in the main Saturday competition, 2 Sunday leagues, Twenty20 Competition and a thriving junior competition.

Current Test stars such as Andrew Flintoff began their careers in the Palace Shield, though it remains a competition for amateurs only. Teams such as Vernon Carus, Fulwood & Broughton, and Longridge have dominated in recent years, but an influx of new clubs such as Walton-le-Dale ensures that competition remains keen and standards of facilities and play continue to improve.

Penwortham Cricket Club, one of the Palace Shield's Founder Member Clubs, hold the current record for the most number of Premier Division titles with 14 wins.

Penwortham Cricket Club was founded in 1880 and became a founder member of the Palace Shield competition in 1902.

The ground is situated in Lower Penwortham, 2 miles south of Preston, and has been our home since 1893. It is small and compact but provides an excellent cricket wicket. The facilities consist of a modern brick pavilion, built in 1995, with a small bar; a car park; 3 bays of artificial nets purchased with the assistance of a Sport England grant; a mobile grass practice net and score box. The Club also boasts a newly refurbished function room which can be hired for private functions - see ECB 'penwortham play cricket' website.

The Club run 4 senior Saturday teams and 1 Sunday Team all playing competitive cricket in the Moore & Smalley Palace Shield Competition. In addition Penwortham have a 20/20 team playing in the mid-week league. There is a strong junior section covering all age groups from 6 to 17. The juniors start in a Kwik Cricket group and develop through the U11; U13; U15 & U17's, with all teams playing league cricket under the guidance of qualified coaches.
