The college was founded in 1980 from the sixth form departments of the the Humphry Davy Grammar School for Boys and Penzance Girls grammar school and was known until 1990 as Penwith Sixth Form College. Penwith College is a member of the Combined Universities in Cornwall partnership. The college is part of The University of Plymouth Colleges network.
