Le Voyou, also known as The Crook, is a highly stylized French action movie about a criminal, known as "Simon the Swiss", and his largest heist. Directed by Claude Lelouch in 1970, and starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, the movie makes use of a circular narrative and dialogue littered with conflicting statements by several of the characters. Other cinematic techniques, including flashbacks, musical montage, a mixture of film editing styles, misaligned sound mixing, and a movie within the movie, all work together to convey the elusive nature of the title character, and to heighten the mood of the chase.
The film won the David di Donatello for Best Foreign Direction in 1971.
