Song |
"Rude Boy" is a song performed by Rihanna, and reportedly the third single taken from Rated R.[3] It is written by Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, Ester Dean, Makeba Riddick, Rob Swire and Rihanna herself and produced by StarGate. It is co-produced by Rob Swire.
Background and release
Rihanna told Q magazine the song is "about the kind of street, bad boy that girls sometimes like. There's a danger and a swagger there." [4]
UK radio stations began to play the song in January 2010.[5] Rude Boy has been reported to be released on February 22, 2010 in the UK.[6][7] It debuted at #72 on the Billboard Hot 100 due to strong airplay.[8]
Artwork
On the single cover, Rihanna is holding a banner with "Rude Boy" written on the front. It is covering her whole body but revealing her arms and legs. She is wearing a black hat and smoking a cigarette. On the right side of cover, there is a metallic 'R', used on the album cover, and all singles from 'Rated R'. [9] This continues the theme of semi-nude covers for Rihanna's singles, which began with Russian Roulette.
Critical reception
The Guardian said that Rude Boy "exploit[s] Rihanna's most appealing vocal style, a sulky, icy, monotone – uniquely among the pantheon of showboating R&B divas, Rihanna often sounds as if she's about to roll her eyes and tut. It ... turns Rude Boy's pillow talk on its head: "Come on rude boy, can you get it up?" seems less like a come-on than the impatience of a woman who – tsk! – is going to miss America's Next Top Model if rude boy doesn't hurry up."[10].
