Linda Rae Reade (born 1948) is a District Judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. She joined the court in 2002 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.

Early Life and Education

Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Reade graduated from Drake University with her Bachelor's degree in 1970, a Master of Science degree from Iowa State University in 1973 and later from Drake University Law School with a Juris Doctor degree in 1980.

Following law school graduation, Reade was a law clerk in an Iowa private practice firm briefly in 1980 before practicing as an attorney in Iowa until 1986. Reade was an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa from 1986 to 1993, serving as Chief of the General Criminal Prosecutions Division from 1990 to 1993. Reade was appointed by the Iowa Judicial Nominating and Qualifications Commission to serve as a Circuit Court Judge for the Iowa District Court of Polk County, Iowa from 1993 to 2002.

Federal Judicial Career

On the recommendation of Senator Chuck Grassley, Reade was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa by President George W. Bush on June 26, 2002 to a seat vacated by Michael Melloy. Reade was confirmed by the Senate on November 14, 2002 and received her commission on November 26, 2002.

Controversy

On June 21 2010, Judge Reade sentenced former Agriprocessors CEO Sholom Rubashkin, a 51 year old first time offender, to 27 years in prison for financial abuses[1]. According to the sentencing memorandum, her ruling was partially based on charges that Mr Rubashkin allegedly hired illegals and minors[2], of which Mr. Rubashkin was found not guilty on all counts in a state court two weeks earlier[3].

The 27-year sentence was unusual in recent history of financial crimes, and it was even more than the maximum sentence prosecutors have requested, 25 years[4]. It fed suspicions within the Orthodox Jewish community that Mr. Rubashkin was treated too harshly by Judge Reade[5]. Earlier, Judge Reade denied Mr. Rubashkin, a non-violent offender, bail awaiting his sentencing. [6]
