"Fuck You"
Song

"Fuck You!", titled "Forget You" on the radio edit ("F. U." on Sirius XM Hits 1), is a song by American recording artist Cee Lo Green from his third studio album, The Lady Killer. A music video for the song was released on YouTube on August 19, 2010,[1] featuring kinetic typography, with the lyrics of the song appearing on different colored backgrounds with film grain overlaid on the video. The video went viral, getting over two million views within a week of its release.[2] The official music video was released on September 1, 2010.[3] A remix features 50 Cent and also has a video similar to the original version of the song. A remix by American hip-hop group Chiddy Bang was released.

The song topped the charts in The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. It became a top ten hit in Australia, Belgium (Flanders), Canada, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland, New Zealand, Spain and Sweden. In the US it peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Versions

The song was released in various versions. The radio edit of the song is called "Forget You", while another edit is simply entitled "FU" [4][5]. All the versions can be found at the US iTunes store. The original and clean versions and the accompanying music video and lyric video are included in an extended play, entitled "F**k You - Deluxe Single", available for sale in the iTunes store [6]. The original version was released on August 19, 2010, the clean version on September 14, 2010 and the "FU" version on September 21, 2010 [7] to the US iTunes store.

Green performed the song live on The Colbert Report on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, substituting "Fox News" for the title phrase for a portion of the song.

Music video

The official music video was released on September 1, 2010.[8] The video went viral, getting over two million views within a week of its release.[9]

Plot

The video begins with Cee-Lo as a young boy entering the diner. He is interested in a girl throughout the music video known as "The Heartbreaker". As a child, while he offers to let her play with his truck, she ignores him and walks away. The video then fast forwards to his teenage years, where he works in the diner as a cook. He tries to woo the Heartbreaker, but ends up getting embarrassed. During his college years, he studies in the diner with another woman (implied to be his tutor), when he tells the waiter to send the Heart Breaker some food from him. The Heart Breaker throws the food at him and Cee-Lo goes through an epiphany about his life. Finally, he is now in his "Lady Killing" years, with his own car. He waves the Heartbreaker, who is now a cleaner, as if to say "Fuck You".

Covers

The season 7 contestants of The X Factor performed the "Forget You" version of the song on the October 24, 2010 episode. Green's response was, "I saw it, I thought it was cool."[10]

The same version of the song was featured on the November 16, 2010 episode of Glee, "The Substitute", whereon Gwyneth Paltrow sang lead.[11] This version reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and helped propel the original to a new peak of #9. It was also used at the end of the No Ordinary Family episode entitled "No Ordinary Visitors", originally broadcast November 9, 2010.

William Shatner performed his own rendition of the song on the George Lopez show, substituting a few words in the song.[12]

Critical reception

Jason Lipshutz from Billboard gave the song a positive review stating, "it's as sunny as a '60s Motown hit and as expletive-laden as an early Eminem song, a combination that fits the singer's sky-high vocals and offbeat sense of humor well. Over a twinkling piano line, bumping bass and steady percussion, Green shakes off a failed relationship with a gold digger by packing the simple pleasures of old-school soul music into tongue-in-cheek verses and a suitably soaring chorus."[13] Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave the song four out of five stars writing: "As its title suggests, 'F**k You!' is essentially a middle finger extending from the fist of a pop single - and a gloriously catchy Motown stomper of a pop single at that."[14]
