Can you tell me why in Wikipedia's instructions it states not to set up pages for musicians, but there are quite a few already set up on here? Many thanks. Sonya

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

Search box gone--not in upper right, not anywhere...?

Am I blind or lost my mind? I can't find the search box anywhere anymore. I know it was moved to the top right from everything I've read telling me where it is...but it's simply not here at all. I have poured over every sq inch of screen space to no avail. The only way I can access it seems is to search from google. What the heck????

Thanks people. 00:59, 11 December 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.26.208.163 (talk)

See the question immediately above. This may be a problem that intermittently affects some users. You can also go to the Special:Search page. I typically use Google custom search on Wikipedia anyway, since I got in the habit of using it before Wikipedia's built-in search function improved. --Teratornis (talk) 01:05, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Search box no longer appears

Why doesn't the search box appear? This seems to be a problem as of today. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.221.224.7 (talk) 02:06, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to List of Seinfeld minor characters#Notable one-time characters. That list doesn't try to be exhaustive. The show had 180 episodes. Her appearance with the correct spelling is mentioned at Tracy Nelson (actress)#Television and The Cartoon. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:03, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    How to edit/delete uploaded jpegs?

Only an admin can delete an image, but you can fix the error on your computer and then upload the fixed file with the same name. ~~ GB fan ~~ 12:18, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) If you go to the file image page - presumably File:FBI ranks.jpg, the file you have just uploaded - you will see a link partway down the page to "Upload a new version of this file". To have the image deleted instead, go to the file page, then "Edit" and add the magic text "{{db-author}}" at the top. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:20, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Bad faith

Will you please take away my rollbacker and reviewer? The reason is that while most of my edits here on Wikipedia have been good faith, my most recent was bad faith. My original idea was to make something comply with the rest of the page, but while I was doing it, I decided it was a bad thing because it made Wikipedia less convenient for readers. This meant that following through would be bad faith, and I did follow through. That means it was bad faith. Us441(talk)(contribs) 13:55, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Only an administrator can adjust your permissions. Your request seems odd to me, though. I see that you've been experimenting with the formatting of the page 300. If you've changed your mind about what you've done, you can just revert to the version you think is best. I don't understand how good faith/bad faith is relevant to this. But if you really want to have your premissions reduced, make a request on your talk page and draw attention to it with the {{adminhelp}} template. -- John of Reading (talk) 14:13, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I did not include that I was crying in guilt after I did it. In addition, I have changed my mind. Us441(talk)(contribs) 14:43, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, it was bad faith because I decided it was bad before clicking Save. Us441(talk)(contribs)
    Will somebody please respond? Us441(talk)(contribs) 15:26, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
John already responded. I suggest you edit another article to get your mind off the really minor issues related to the 300 article. Either that, or take a short break from Wikipedia. I know that editing Wikipedia can sometimes be anxiety-producing, but you really have nothing to feel "guilty" about.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:56, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Most people have done things they are ashamed of. I am sad if I see that somebody stops doing something of value to them, or to others, because of something they regret doing. It is your decision, of course, but I urge you to try forgiving your self and see what happens. --ColinFine (talk) 00:02, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Has this account been compromised? Perhaps by one of the account holder's fellow students? The request to have permissions reduced reads almost like some sort of prank. Always log out from Wikipedia before leaving a computer that other people can access. --Teratornis (talk) 03:33, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link and ask away. Hello. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over three million articles, and thought that we were directly affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using the encyclopedia. Thus, we have no inside track on the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:52, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    background colour into grey !

please if anyone knows how to contact wikipedia designers; tell them to add an option that enables users to change the background colour of articles so it becomes easier to read!

changing the background color into grey is less harmful to eyesight than white..

i don't know how didn't the designers of wikipedia didn't think of that!

HAVE MERCY! enable "background colour" changing!

and don't say u can't change it to black and that shiny green colour it's silly! and it only works when using a single theme!

The article says it's a "selected" filmography. I don't know how one decides which films should be listed and which shouldn't, but to the extent it's any indication, From Hell to Victory doesn't have its own Wikipedia article, although that's true of some of the others that are listed. Rotten Tomatoes has no reviews, although that's not always surprising for an older film. Anyway, you could always add it.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:07, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Mentoring a disruptive editor

I've seen discussions at ANI where a blocked editor's block is lifted if another editor offers to mentor them. My question is this: If the mentor fails in this goal, that is the editor becomes disruptive again, does reflect poorly on the mentor? A Quest For Knowledge (talk) 22:00, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I'd look at what the mentor has done - if their actions have been correct, and it's purely the mentoree who is taking the piss then no, I wouldn't see it as a reflection on the mentor. However, if the mentor has failed to see the problems, or have ignored them, then it could be seen as a problem in the mentor as well -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 22:46, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Need help entering article in Wikipedia

I tried to enter an article, it was suggested it might not be significant enough and to put it in the "Talk" section? I hit the "move" in blue but it was just more info about why I should and a warning not to cut and paste.

I would love to put my proposed article in the "talk" place, but I'm just not adept at putting something in. I read different Wiki instructions and when I started to try to follow what it said there were a lot of warnings about did I want to move away from the site. The above article is a self-congratulatory type. It does not tell about cruel coercion used for collecting various taxes/money. The Dai never gives any account and tells Imam, who is in seclusion for several hundred years, only can ask account. Using social boycott of dissidents, all opposition is smashed. Dissidents have been murdered also. Dawoodi Bohra practice genital mutilation of seven year old girls as a rite of passage. They make women isolated for four month when her husband dies irrespective of her age for determining if she was pregnant. At present time pregnancy can be checked by a simple test; however the Dai forces Bohras to ancient practice. Bohras portray themselves as pragmatic but they act as slaves of the Dai and act like that.

I do not know where to comment this article. It must be thoroughly revised as to give correct information. Struggles of reform within the sect also must be mentioned. If I notice a new Listen Live link or website for a radio station, how do I know when to add it into a Wikipedia page? In other words, the page might get reverted back because my updates might have been in violation of some policies I might have overlooked. In the future, what should I do if I notice a brand new webcast or website link for a radio station? How do I alert the Wikipedia community so that perhaps someone who is more skilled and experienced at the art of Wikipedia page writing could apply the updates for me? And, also, are Facebook pages always off limits in the Wikipedia world? 98.229.132.126 (talk) 06:05, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For the link to the new webcast/website, you can ask on the talk page of the article you think it belongs on. The editors that normally work on the article will be able to tell you whether they belive it belongs on the page. As far as Facebook, they are not always offlimits. The only ones that should be normally linked in an article are those that are official Facebook pages of the subject of the article. Hope this answers your questions. ~~ GB fan ~~ 06:20, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Linking to a radio station's official website, as you did at WNYN-FM, is always welcome. An official website such as http://www.kiss102.com/ is normally preferred over a facebook group. Asking at an article's talk page is a good idea for important or popular articles, but for an article on a small radio station such as WXXS it's possible that no-one will see your question. A centralised place for asking about linking is the External Links Noticeboard. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 13:41, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello,
I'm not certain that I understand your question, but the only things Wikipedia publishes are encyclopedia articles. One person's commendation of another could not serve as an article as it would not meet the expected standard of neutrality. We do have a list of alternative outlets; perhaps one of these would be more suitable?

If you are asking that an article be created, there may to be sufficient reliable sources available to create an article, such as some listed here, but Wikipedia works by users who are interested in a topic being bold and creating articles themselves, citing to such reliable sources and generally, people like you who have a confliuct of interest with the subject matter, should not do so. You can request that an article be made at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Biographies#Archaeologists, though there's no guarantee it will be acted upon.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 14:21, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please pass this on to someone that can watch over this major change of FactFinder at U.S. Census Bureau. See my comment at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:United_States_Census_Bureau#New_FactFinder_Might_Break_Links_In_Wikipedia.3F Sbmeirow (talk) 06:37, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If the links are not yet broken you can archive them at a site such as WebCite and add the archive links via the archiveurl parameter to citation templates such as {{Cite web}}. There might be a bot program that can hunt down all the links and archive them automatically. --Teratornis (talk) 07:17, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Please Jimmy Wales - stop begging - you have made your site into an annoying spamming bit of rubbish. I'll have to find a different site." That's certainly a very nice thing to say about a site that provides you access to all this information for free, without advertising. You might not have thought about it, but keeping Wikipedia active actually costs money. All that server space and network access doesn't just drop down from the heavens. And besides, Jimmy Wales has to eat and stuff. Good luck finding any other site that does all this for free, without advertising. If you ever find one, please make sure to mention it here. As with any site on the Web, Wikipedia cannot be all things to all people at all times. In fact, Wikipedia explicitly claims not to be lots of things. That's why the Web has more than one site. Those who dislike Wikipedia and cannot find a way to change it should visit other sites. Those who like Wikipedia the way it is should not be bothered if some of the world's 6.8 billion people don't share their preference. Incidentally, one way to remove the fundraising banners from Wikipedia would be to donate enough money to make them redundant. --Teratornis (talk) 22:21, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Use of Photos

I am stumped. I've searched FAQ and a myriad of Wiki Help pages and can't figure this out:

I have had 2 photos deleted that I have received from the photographer. The photographers do not have Wikipedia accounts nor do they want to so the idea of having them upload the photos themselves to the Ayurveda page is not in the cards. I have e-mail traffic that authorizes such use. What do I have to do to get these accepted? Preventing Libel on Wikipedia

    To Whom It May Concern:

We have been fighting desperately and tirelessly to simply remove the slander and libel that plagues the our Wikipedia page.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Tulip_(2010_film)

The article is completely unjust and there is a very obvious vindictive effort being made to damage the film's reputation when considering the lack of objective information provided. Since we do not have the time or ability to properly edit this page again and again, I am going to outline several facts with credible sources which I hope you will add to the page instead of ignore and delete, like whoever has for the past several months. Wikipedia should stand for providing objective information and I am going to provide it to you now. If whoever controls the page does not heed and update the page with this information, we will have to pursue you legally on the grounds of defamation and libel.

    1. The film is not American. It has an entirely Afghan cast with an Afghan Director, Writer, Producer and a sparse American crew. Sonia Cole is a dual-citizen of Afghanistan and the USA. Since she directed, produced, co-wrote, acted and financed the film and is an Afghan citizen, while you have no proof of the contrary, creative control of the motion picture was, is and has been largely in the hands of citizens or residents of Afghanistan. It was Afghanistan's official entry, making it an Afghan film. The source you provide to the contrary "TheWrap.com" is not an official or legitimate source and the link provided: "http://www.thewrap.com/awards/column-post/academy%27s-foreign-language-field-sports-65-entries-21680" is dead and leads to nowhere, thus further discrediting it as a source since no source even exists.

    2. The term "Beverly Hills socialite" is degrading and an inaccurate representation of Sonia Cole, who spent several months in Afghanistan risking her life to make a film, as evidenced by several of the articles already cited on the page. The source used for this statement is also irrelevant and does not concern the film. She is a filmmaker and philanthropist, which is not a statement that glorifies her, it simply states the truth. "Beverly Hills socialite" is a term more conducive to a housewife who attends glamorous parties in Los Angeles, not someone who makes films in war zones where several sources clearly indicate her life being in danger.

    3. The film was not rejected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a possible submission for the 83rd Academy Awards in the category of "Foreign Language Film" and there is no source provided to prove it. The film was accepted as a late submission which can be verified by calling the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at (310) 247-3000. A screening date is set for the Foreign Language Film committee on January 10th, 2010. The source provided to the contrary "TheWrap.com" is not an official or legitimate source and the link provided: "http://www.thewrap.com/awards/column-post/academy%27s-foreign-language-field-sports-65-entries-21680" is dead and leads to nowhere, thus further discrediting it as a source since no source even exists.

    4. The plot is inaccurate, in that it avoids what is indicated on IMDb and the official website, which are both listed as sources on the page already. Citing two articles does not adequetly capture the plot or due it justice.

    5. The production paragraph makes absolutely no effort to present both sides and takes a very malicious stance. One of the statements ""the women ran off somewhere in "Pakistan," never to be seen again."" is nowhere to be found in the cited article.

    6. The following statement is also false: ""As reported by the Times, according to Cole, the film's cinematographer, a producer and a set designer had all abandoned her "in the middle of production." The New York Times corrected the item noting that Cole had made that statement and not the Times and that in fact the crew had remained through most of the dangerous film shoot"". The underlined last sentence is false and even the article and further statements on the page indicate it is. It was only the set designer who left 4 days before the end of the shoot, while one of the producers and the initial cinematographer DID leave in the middle of the shoot. No attribution in the article or anywhere else indicates anything else, so this claim cannot be made credibly. The cinematographer is quoted himself in the article confirming that he did leave in the middle of production.

    7. In the release section it indicates "The film has not been released anywhere in the world" is another completley false statement. Even the Wikipedia page itself says the release date was "September 23rd, 2010" which is correct. Another obvious indication of libel.

    8. In the release section it indicates ""However, the film was submitted for and rejected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a possible submission for the long list of foreign films to qualify for consideration for the 83rd Academy Awards in the category of "Foreign Language Film"" is another completley false statement. It was Afghanistan's official entry, making it an Afghan film.

    9. In the release section it indicates ""Among other qualifications regarding eligibility, the Academy's rules governing the foreign language field state that "creative control of the motion picture must be largely in the hands of citizens or residents of that country." Cole, an Afghan expatriate, has been a citizen and resident of the United States for more than three decades. Financing of the film came from Cole, and the majority of the film's core crew were Americans"" is another slanderous and misleading statement considering that Sonia Cole is a dual-citizen of Afghanistan and the USA. Since she directed, produced, co-wrote, acted and financed the film and is an Afghan citizen, while you have no proof of the contrary, creative control of the motion picture was, is and has been largely in the hands of citizens or residents of Afghanistan. It was also Afghanistan's official entry, making it an Afghan film.

    10. In the reception section, the statement ""Afghan attendees at the film's premiere in Kabul told a New York Times reporter that the film departed from Afghan mores and realities when it depicted an Afghan man kissing a woman's face through her head-to-toe burqa, and Coalition forces and Taliban fighters spending time in an Afghan cafe (either at the same time or separately). Afghan attendees at the movie's premier in Kabul told a New York Times reporter that the film didn't depict the Afghanistan that they know and are familiar with. Amin Mokhtar, an employee of the Afghan Film Organization, balked at a funeral scene, in which mourners threw handfuls of earth into the graves, not an Afghan practice, he said. “The director and workers grew up in America and don’t know much about Afghan culture, that is the point,” Mr. Mokhtar said."" is only using one article as a source, which is not an adequate or fair method of indicating reception. Considering that the journalist is disgruntled for not getting the Black Tulip story initially, and the individual quoted was an actor who was refused a part in the movie, the sources become even less credible and more biased.

    11. In the See Also section, the following Wikipedia articles:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_submissions_to_the_83rd_Academy_Awards_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film#cite_note-the_wrap-4 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Afghan_submissions_for_the_Academy_Award_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film

The statements made about Black Tulip in these articles are also false. The source you provide to the contrary "TheWrap.com" is not an official or legitimate source.

If you stand for justice and believe that Wikipedia is about providing objective information, you will help make the changes necessary to remove this aforementioned slander.

    Thank You,

Chris A. Cole Co-Producer, Black Tulip Breadwinner Productions www.breadwinnerfilms.com —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.250.12.122 (talk) 19:15, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    • If you want to add an existing image to an article, add [[File:File name.jpg|thumb|Caption text.]] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information.
    • If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy. A single insect, or a group of insects, could bite several times to form a larger pattern. A human could leave a partial bite mark by biting just a pinch of flesh. Post-bite swelling, infection, or necrosis could alter or obscure the original bite patterns. For example, the bacteria left by the tick responsible for Lyme disease produce a characteristic bullseye pattern around the original bite which is much larger than the tick itself. --Teratornis (talk) 20:35, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, was just looking at the stats on Limkokwing University of Creative Technology using the traffic counter ( Article -> History -> Page view statistics ) and noticed a flattr micro-payment tab... struck me as odd.

Looking at the URL of traffic counter, it appears to be an off-site tool (and perhaps outside of the remit of wikipedia), although wikipedia does link to it on every article. Is there any policy that says yay or nay about incorporating the tool and the tool having a micro-payment thingy set up? For the record, I don't have any problem personally with the tool creator making a couple of quid from the tool, just curious about the WP position on it Darigan (talk) 11:06, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not aware of any explicit policy, but can cite a similar example: the "Geolocate" link listed on every IP talk page and contributions list points to ip2location.com, which offers a free service but also links to a paid one. Since we're OK with that I'd be really surprised if there were any serious objection to stats.grok.se, the external host that offers the pageview stats service, adding a tip jar link to that tool. TV channels

Is it appropiate to list the current TV programms of a certain TV channel at the article of such TV channel, or is that trivial information in some way? MBelgrano (talk) 11:58, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

With how often they change, I would think that a link to the channel's official site would be better. See WP:EL. I'm specifically thinking of the following: "Sites that contain neutral and accurate material that is relevant to an encyclopedic understanding of the subject and cannot be integrated into the Wikipedia article due to copyright issues, amount of detail (such as professional athlete statistics, movie or television credits, interview transcripts, or online textbooks), or other reasons." (emphasis mine) Dismas|(talk) 12:08, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    That would be a clear "No"; see WP:NOTTVGUIDE. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:57, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have looked through FAQs, but can find nothing directly related to this suggestion.

Would it be possible to link each Wikipedia article to to other language versions of the same article?

For example, I have been doing quite a lot searching in German subject matter. Despite Google settings to the contrary, only English language versions of Wikipedia articles are retrieved. In general, I have found German-language articles on German subject matter to be superior to the English versions.

There are at least two good reasons for cross-linking language versions: 1) simple convenience; 2) to provide additional incentive to improve the standard of weaker articles by more immediate comparision with stronger ones. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.143.206.29 (talk) 12:55, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, in the left column of this page there is a tab "Languages" with a drop down list of different languages, the different languages in the drop down list link you to that language version of the page you are on. The list will be there on all article pages as well.Darigan (talk) 12:59, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that he declares publicly that he does not accept a salary from the Foundation, and does not intend to accept any money from it, should be a bit of a clue. 'Youtube' is not a reliable source. We need to stick to verifiable facts - and anything lacking such a reference (to e.g. a newspaper, book) could be removed, by anyone.
We also need to be neutral. For example, saying He has been a big player in the Italian Movement. He's currently very active - is opinion, and not fact.
I could edit it, and say he is not very active. How can we check which is correct? Please read Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners to see how we ensure the facts check out.  Chzz  ►  00:59, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Citing journals

What is the Wikipedia guideline on citing abstracts of scientific articles, if the full article is not available to the editor ? Thank you. 24.92.70.160 (talk) 03:51, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The relevant section of Wikipedia's policy on original research states, "Do not make analytic, synthetic, interpretive, explanatory, or evaluative claims about material found in a primary source." See the same section as well as Wikipedia:SCIRS#Respect_secondary_sources for other commentary about when it is appropriate to use primary sources. What I'm saying is that by and large, there's rarely a need to access the full text of a primary scientific article when contributing to Wikipedia, and thus no harm in citing an article when you can only access the abstract. See also WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT – if you've only seen the abstract, you should only be citing it for a fact made explicit in the abstract itself. Note also that there's nothing wrong with citing non-free sources per WP:PAYWALL. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 04:19, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
PAYWALL is useful. I also recommend WP:OFFLINE as a reminder to go check out the complete source and grab a page number. The verifiability standards say nothing about the ease of verification. If you are basing something off of an abstract it might be better to check out the complete source if possible. If one of you are going off the abstract then keep in mind that differing interpretations of the abstract means that it is not complete enough or their are other issues.Cptnono (talk) 08:48, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Verification is about wide availibility, not universal availibility. You probably could not get away with citing an unpublished monograph, like someone's master's thesis or something like that, but if it was a genuine published book or journal which is availible in major libraries, you're fine even if it has no online presence. --Jayron32 13:44, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Some kind of social network service may be helpful, as it's very likely that you and your friend share one or more common friends. We have a List of social networking websites that might be a good place to start. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 08:18, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you have any photos of your friend which might also be online somewhere, you might be able to search for them with TinEye. TinEye does not identify objects or people in photos, it compares some aspects that image files have in common. A social networking site might give a higher chance of success, however, as you can readily track down friends from even your distant past with them. Make an account on Facebook, for example, and people you haven't heard from in years will probably start to contact you. --Teratornis (talk) 20:27, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes for it to be displayed by <references/> or {{Reflist}} it will have to be enclosed in ref tags. – ukexpat (talk) 17:26, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am trying to distinguish external links from references. Kittybrewster 17:31, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I guess you could use a {{Cite web}} without ref tags in the external links section, similar to the use of {{Cite book}} in a bibliography section. Also, {{Official}} can be used for "Official" websites. – ukexpat (talk) 17:45, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Call out box for politicians, public figures

I am currently in the process of uploading an entry on a local politician running for office, and I wanted to see how to insert a call out box (See: Gavin Newsom) into my entry. The page I'm working on isn't live, yet, as I'm still sorting through how to edit it properly, cite my assertions, etc.

In the meantime, can somebody show me how to insert one of the call out boxes I mention above?

If you mean the infobox, you'll see the code for it at the top of the source of the page you mention, if you hit the "Edit this page" button. Further, the subject of your userspace draft, James Meija, seems to be at risk of falling short of our notability thresholds. WP:POLITICIAN probably applies, and he doesn't appear to have held an elected office as yet. There's also a good deal of extraneous detail that would be removed if the article were moved into mainspace. It might be best to wait until the election; if he's elected, then a short article would probably be justified. --AndrewHowse (talk) 21:29, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the help, and I agree that the current draft is far too long. I just am using the current information to play around with the coding until I fully understand how to upload here. He actually has held elected office, and I think he would fall under WP:POLITICIAN. Thank you both for your help. --CJPowell —Preceding undated comment added 22:36, 15 December 2010 (UTC).[reply]

Where do I question/appeal/suggest modifications to Wikipedia's actual core policies? What constitutes a reliable source. Clarifications in third party review. You are probably on a dynamic IP address. The IP was probably used by others in the past and they made thos edits. If you log in with your new username from now on all edits you make will be attributed to your username. ~~ GB fan ~~ 04:03, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now that you have an account you needn't worry about shared IP addresses. Provided you are logged in to your account when you edit, your edits will be associated with your user name, not an IP address. Only a very small number of trusted users with checkuser rights can access the IP address(es) associated with your user name. – ukexpat (talk) 04:04, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Email domain change

Montenegro changed its national domain from .yu (we are a former Yugoslavian republic) to .me (Montenegro). By this @cg.yu email domain was changed to @t-com.me ("cg" originaly stood for "Internet CG", but this state-owned company was bought by T-Com some time before the change of domain).

I have forgot my password and Mediawiki is sending me a new password to the out-of-use @cg.yu. It would be great if all email addresses on all Wikimedia projects would be changed for all users that have an email address with @cg.yu and all of them notified on their new emails. If that is not possible is it at least possible to change mine? I have from 2003 to 2006 been an active editor on many projects, particularly on sr:Wikipedia, en:Wikipedia and sr:Wikinews.

This happened few years ago, and there was a period (6 months probably) when both domains where active. If I have changed my email address in this period there would not have been no problem, but I didn't have an Internet access at the time. I would have used somebody elses if it crossed my mind that domain change could do this to me. I wanted to reach out to someone for this for a long while but I didn't know who. I'm sure that many others (who haven't done this like I have not) have resolved this problem by registering a new username. I wish to keep mine. --Milan Tešović 09:42, 16 December 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.143.100.252 (talk) [reply]
