Cascamorras

The Cascamorras is a festival that takes place in Guadix and Baza in the province of Granada, Spain annually on September 6. The two towns fight for possession of the statue of the Virgen de la Piedad.

In 2006 was declared "National Tourist Interest".

History

Guadix and Baza are two Andalusian cities of the Province of Granada, neighbors, sisters and rivals. Cascamorras, a worker in Guadix, found buried a sacred image of Virgen de la Piedad (Our Lady of Mercy) while working in lands of Baza. Encouraged by his Guadixan countrymens attempted carry to Guadix the sacred image, but Bazans snatched it before he got his way, punishing what they considered a sacred theft. When Cascamorras returned to Guadix with the empty handed, his countrymens, who expected exciting to the image of the Virgin, are deeply disappointed and viciously pursued whom they consider responsible for their frustration. Finally, hero and people reconciled, pray to the Virgin who was in the other town. Since then, recalling those events that unite them and face them, Baza and Guadix celebrate Cascamorras Fiesta in the late summer of each year.
