Seven films made the top 50 list of highest-grossing films and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that as of this year, their Best Picture category would consist of ten nominees, rather than five (the first time since the 1943 awards).

Avatar has grossed over $2.7 billion, making it the highest-grossing film in history, as well as the only film in history to gross $2 billion dollars in box office receipts and the first film to gross over $700,000,000 in the US and Canada. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 2012, Up and New Moon, are also among the top 50.
