Russian conductor Dmitri Kitajenko was music director of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra for 14 years before taking up the same position with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (1990-1998) and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (1990-1996). He was born in Leningrad and studied at the Glinka Musikschule and the conservatories of Leningrad and Moscow. He won the Herbert von Karajan competition in 1969.
