The BMW X1 is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by BMW. It extends the current BMW Sports Activity Series model lineup which includes the BMW X3, BMW X5, and the BMW X6. The X1 is based on the same platform as the BMW 3 Series Touring (wagon) with xDrive.[2] Compared to the larger X3, the X1 is positioned as a slightly smaller but more affordable and sportier entry.[3]

BMW Concept X1 (2008)

The concept version of the X1 wagon was unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.[4]

E84 (2009-)

X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition (2011-)

The vehicle was unveiled in International Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA 2011).[5]

X1 sDrive 16d (2012-)

It is a version with reduced engine power.

The vehicle was unveiled in 21st Auto Mobil International Leipzig 2012.[6]

Equipment

  • The cargo capacity has 420 litres of storage space, which can increase to 480 litres with the back seats pulled a little to the front, and up to 1350 litres of storage space with the seats folded. For comparison, the 3-Series Touring (E91) has 460 and the X3 (E83) has 480 litres.
  • The backrest in the rear is adjustable in 11 steps and can be divided in the ratio 40:20:40
  • Adaptive cruise control

The USA market may only get the BMW N52B30 3.0-liter inline-6, either in the 260 hp (194 kW) tune as in the X3 xDrive30i[7] or the 230 hp (172 kW) tune as in the 328/xDrive28i variants.[8] BMW will start selling the X1 in the American market by late 2012 as a 2013 model, but BMW Canada started selling the X1 in early 2011 as a 2012 model. The Indian market is currently getting the sdrive18i (4 cyl petrol), sdrive20d and sdrive20d (highline) (4 cyl diesels). The three variants have an 8-speed automatic transmission. No manual transmission option is available now.[9]

Production

Production began in Europe in the BMW Werk Leipzig plant in October 2009. It will not be sold in the United States until 2013. It is also being produced in Chennai, India, and in Shenyang, China by BMW-Brilliance Automotive Ltd.

Future Development

The next generation BMW X1 is expected in 2015. It was recently reported that the new X1 will share its platform with the MINI Countryman. It is also expected that the next X1 will lose the six-cylinder option in favor of four-cylinder engines to increase interior space. [11]
