Revision as of 03:25, 25 September 2012
Please submit error reports only for content that is currently or will imminently appear on the Main Page. For general discussion about the Main Page, kindly use its talk page. |
National variations of the English language have been extensively discussed previously:
|
To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.
- Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
- Offer a correction if possible.
- References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
- Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 07:09 on 23 December 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
- Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
- Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
- No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
- Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
- Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.
Errors in the summary of today's or tomorrow's featured article
- The main page header for the lead article states that Jesse Washington "entered a guilty plea," but the article makes clear that he was found guilty after trial.

- Not related to the graphicness of the image discussed below, shouldn't main page images be sized to a maximum of 100 pixels in width and height? The image syntax should be changed so the size is specified as
100x100px
rather than100px
. DYK is rather clear about this, but TFA doesn't appear to have such written instructions. --115.67.65.34 (talk) 03:25, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Errors in In the news
(moved from ITNC) The lead on the Wikipedia main page seems to me misleading, according to current information. The current In the News lead-in states: "Attacks on diplomatic missions and widescale protests occur following the release of a short film critical of Islam." Yet there is evidence from eyewitnesses to the attack and from intelligence sources that the Benghazi attacks were preplanned and coordinated. A U.S. senator has also stated that there was complicity with Libyan guards at the Consulate. See the investigation section in the article U.S. Consulate attack in Benghazi. Perhaps change to: "Attacks on diplomatic missions and widescale protests occur on anniversary of September 11, possibly linked to film critical of Islam and terrorist group activities."Cirrus Editor (talk) 02:15, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
- Well, to be fair, "following" just refers to a temporal (not causal) relationship, so it is perfectly accurate the way it is written. The film came out first, then the attacks did. --Jayron32 02:38, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
- I'd say this is simultaneously accurate and misleading. It's like saying someone had a heart attack and fell down the stairs. Playing with the order can suggest that one caused the other to occur. I'd support re-phrasing to make clear that the film prompted the sometimes violent protests, and the attack in Bengazi simply occurred. The lead in that article suggests we're still unclear on what role the film played there.--Chaser (talk) 02:51, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
- I'd like to see a more comprehensive In the News teaser that captures the information from credible sources, including eyewitnesses and intelligence sources, that the attack on the Consulate in Benghazi was a preplanned and coordinated event. RPGs, assault rifles, and mortars were used in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, and a U.S. senator stated that Libyan security guards acted in collusion with the attackers. Another intelligence source on the ground in Libya is quoted as saying "there was no demonstration outside the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi" before the attack.--Cirrus Editor (talk) 11:33, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
- Now we know that the attackers used gun trucks in the Bengazhi assault. Who brings a gun truck to a protest? Can we re-visit the inaccurate lead that is still on the Wikipedia main page?Cirrus Editor (talk) 22:04, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

- Why the heck has this ITN been stalled for three days? That link above lists all kinds of news - instead, Wikipedia seems to be intent on spotlighting some obscure French magazine for a full week. Wnt (talk) 17:59, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
- There's are dozens of unedited and unimproved Wikipedia articles (as well as some yet uncreated) that you could work on on any given day to fix this problem. --Jayron32 06:18, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
- I wonder where this US Senator is getting his intelligence? (cough cough). 69.62.243.48 (talk) 22:42, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
Blame the victims
"British Prime Minister David Cameron apologises after an independent panel on the 1989 Hillsborough disaster finds that negligent police and emergency services manipulated evidence to blame the victims."
repeats a common error about this story. It should say
"British Prime Minister David Cameron apologises after an independent panel on the 1989 Hillsborough disaster finds that negligent police and emergency services manipulated evidence to blame the Liverpool fans."
(bold just for emphasis here, not to be included in the template)
The panel found that the police manipulated evidence to blame the Liverpool fans, and the victims were Liverpool fans... but there were a lot of Liverpool fans and the ones getting the blame weren't the victims.

- N.B. This error is not made at Hillsborough disaster#Findings so let's be consistent and correct the error here. Yaris678 (talk) 08:00, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
- Done Although it will probably be off the main page pretty soon, this seems a reasonable change. --Floquenbeam (talk) 15:48, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. Yeah; I realise I spotted it a bit late... but better late than never. Yaris678 (talk) 16:33, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Kylie Gauci: could her country be added? you can look at the article or guess from the colour of her kit but it would be better if it were clear. The team can also be linked. Suggest:
- ... that although Kylie Gauci (pictured) is a 2 point player, she was the only player on the Australian team to score a three point basket at the 2012 Paralympics?
