Imagine Dragons are an American indie rock band based in Las Vegas, Nevada.[3] Their sound has been compared to such bands as The Killers and Arcade Fire. Their music has often been cited as positive, devoid of profanity and sexual content. The group's name is an anagram, with the original words known only to the members of the band.[4]

History

Formation and early work (2008–2010)

The members of Imagine Dragons first met while attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.[5] The early lineup included Dan Reynolds, Wayne Sermon, and married couple Andrew and Brittany Tolman.[6] The band released two EPs titled Imagine Dragons EP[7] and Hell and Silence EP[8] in 2010, both recorded at Battle Born Studios. They returned to the studio in 2011.[9][10][11] Another EP, It's Time, was made before they signed a record deal.[12]

Lineup changes, international success and Night Visions (2011–present)

Andrew and Brittany Tolman left the band in July 2011 and were replaced by Daniel Platzman and Theresa Flaminio[6]. Imagine Dragons was signed to major label Interscope Records in November 2011.[13] They worked closely with producer Alex Da Kid with whom they recorded their first major label release at Westlake Recording Studios in West Hollywood, California. An EP entitled Continued Silence was released on Valentine's Day (February 14, 2012) digitally and peaked at #40 on the Billboard 200.

Shortly after, "It's Time" was released as a single and peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. It holds the record for the longest run on the 2012 Alternative Top 10 charts.[14] The music video debuted on April 17, 2012 on all MTV affiliates and the band was named MTV PUSH Artist of the Week.[15] The video was subsequently nominated for an MTV Video Music Award in the "Best Rock Video" category. "It's Time" was certified a platinum single by the RIAA and gold by the ARIA.

The band announced they would be entering Studio X inside Palms Casino Resort to finish recording their debut album Night Visions in the summer of 2012 and released the album on the day after Labor Day (September 4, 2012).[16] It peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart with first week sales in excess of 83,000 copies, the highest charting for a debut rock album since 2006.[17] The album also reached #1 on the Billboard Alternative and Rock Album charts as well as the top ten on the Austrian, Canadian, German, and Norwegian Albums charts. As of February 2013, Night Visions is certified gold by the RIAA as well as in Canada, Norway, and Sweden. It has thus far had two Top 40 singles in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Belgium, New Zealand, Sweden, and Switzerland. Second single "Radioactive" reached #1 on the Billboard Alternative Songs, Billboard Rock Songs, and Swedish Singles charts and has been certified platinum in Denmark and gold in the US, Canada, and Norway. It is the band's second single on the Billboard Hot 100 and has peaked at #7.

Billboard listed them as one of "2012's Brightest New Stars".[18] Amazon.com called the band their "Favorite Rock artist of 2012".[19]

Imagine Dragons have performed "It's Time" live on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (2012) and Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2012) and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (2012), and Conan (2013). They performed "Radioactive" live on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2012), The Late Show with David Letterman (2013), and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (2013). Trailers for feature films including The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Words, The Croods, and The Host have featured tracks from Continued Silence. Imagine Dragons took a tour around the United States, Canada, and many countries in Europe, featuring their album, Night Visions in 2012.[20][21] The tour sold out with the exception of two nearly sold out shows.

On October 27, 2012, Imagine Dragons producer Alex da Kid took to the internet to announce that Imagine Dragons is releasing a new EP "Hear Me," along with a 2:13 long sample of the EP was also released. On November 25, 2012, the EP was released in the UK.[22]

In 2013, Imagine Dragons will return to Europe and North America with the Night Visions Tour. Tickets are currently available although all of the North American dates have sold out.[23] The band announced 13 additional U.S. summer tour dates (with possibility of additional markets to come) due to demand.[24]

They are also scheduled to perform at summer festivals including Sasquatch! Music Festival, Isle of Wight Festival, Rock am Ring and Rock im Park, Summer Sonic, Hultsfred Festival, Kanrocksas, T in the Park, Lollapalooza, Hangout Music Festival, Reading and Leeds Festivals, Osheaga Festival, Yahoo! On the Road Festival, Bergenfest, Slotsfjell Festival, Pukkelpop, NorthSide Festival (Denmark) etc.
