Sleaford Joint Sixth Form is a partnership in Sleaford, England, between Carre's Grammar School and St George's Academy to provide greater learning opportunities for all students.
History
The Sixth form was amalgamated in 1983 in order to increase the education opportunities for all of the students from Sleaford's three secondary schools. At the time it was unprecedented and has since received national acknowledgement for its achievements, mainly because the partnership is between a Grammar School(s) and a comprehensive/academy.
It is a partnership that works quite well, as Carre's is better suited for more traditional subjects (e.g. Sciences due to its Grammar School status and science specialism) and St George's is optimised for both the more modern subjects and traditional subjects (e.g. Mathematics due to its Academy status and Maths and Computing specialism).
Carre's Grammar School and St George's Academy work together to provide Post-16 opportunities in the Sleaford area. This arrangement is known as the Sleaford Joint Sixth Form. This arrangement enables the students to mix freely with the students from either school and to choose courses that are offered by each of the schools.
Students who wish to join the Joint Sixth Form and who have not previously attended Carre's or St George's are very welcome to apply and will be based at the most suitable school. There are over 600 students in the Joint Sixth Form. Carre's and St George's are a few minutes walk from each other. Sixth Form courses are taught in two-hour blocks to reduce movement, and where necessary suitable breaks are provided to enable students to walk between the schools. A high proportion of the students choose one or more courses outside their base school and most will spend time in another school, for example for extra curricular activities.
As the Sixth Form is of a considerable size it is possible to offer a very wide range of courses and also to offer subjects that often only attract small numbers because of their specialised character. Many of the more popular subjects are offered at both Carre’s and St George’s, which makes almost any combination of subjects possible.
Both schools have a pastoral structure comprising a Head of Sixth Form and a team of Tutors. The day-to-day running of the Sixth Form is carried out by the Director of the Joint Sixth Form together with the respective Heads of Sixth Form in each school.
Kesteven and Sleaford High School
The sixth form used to be inclusive of all of the Sleaford Secondary Schools: Carre's Grammar School, St George's Academy (formerly St Georges College of Technology) and Kesteven and Sleaford High School (Grammar School). However, before the beginning of this academic year (2010–11) Kesteven and Sleaford High School left the partnership.
