The Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is a synod, or diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
Michael J. Neils, former bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod, resigned on January 26, 2006, following admission of sexual misconduct involving another woman. This admission also has led to divorce proceedings with his wife of 35 years. Rev. Alton Zenker has assumed duties as interim bishop of the synod until a permanent bishop can be elected during the synod assembly, May 24 - May 26, 2006, in Tucson, Arizona. The new bishop will serve a six year term, through May of 2012.
