Plot
When Porky and Gabby Goat realize that they overslept to 10:00 after their alarm goes off at 06:00, they end up rushing to work at Peter Piper Pickled Peppers and sneaking in. When it came to clocking in, Gabby tries to turn the clock back a few hours, but ends up struggling and the clock goes crazy. Their boss (a bulldog) catches them and states that if they weren't going to make it, he would've sent their work to them. The boss warns them that if they are late one more time, he will sell their furniture. He strikes a match on Porky's snout to light his cigar, then orders them to get to work.
Later that night at 08:00, Porky Pig sets the alarm clock as Gabby complains about having to go to bed early. Porky reminds Gabby that if they are late again, their furniture will be sold. Porky climbs into bed and they both fall asleep until a bunch of cats next door wake them up. Later that night, the moon comes out and its light wakes up Porky. One of Porky's attempts to close the window ends up wrecking his bed. This also disturbs Gabby, who ends up shooting the moon, which then falls as a result. Gabby found that unbelievable. As the night progresses, a thunderstorm occurs while Porky is sleeping in Gabby's bed. Porky closes the window only for a leak in the roof to disturb him and Gabby. Gabby opens an umbrella in the house with Porky telling him that it's bad luck. Gabby ignores Porky's statement until lightning destroys the umbrella. When Gabby quotes that he should try sleeping under Niagara Falls, a lot of water comes through the roof and down on them.
The next morning, Porky and Gabby are shown sleeping in the drawers when the alarm clock goes off at 06:00. They get themselves ready and drive off to work. When Porky and Gabby arrive at Peter Piper Pickled Peppers, they see a sign on the door that says "Closed Sunday." Porky and Gabby drive home, and when they climb back into the drawers to sleep, the alarm clock goes off again at 06:15 and Porky hits it with a mallet.
Remake
Porky's Badtime Story was remade in 1944 as Tick Tock Tuckered with Daffy Duck replacing Gabby Goat as Porky's sidekick. It was an exact remake, except for the following differences:
- Tick Tock Tuckered was eligible for reissue into the "Blue Ribbon Classics" series of Merrie Melodies, as it was in Technicolor. Badtime Story was not eligible for that collection, as it was in black and white. later, Porky's Badtime Story was digitally colorized in 1992.
- In Tick Tock Tuckered, while Porky is naked, Daffy puts on two shoes. In Badtime Story, Gabby only puts on one shoe.
- In Tick Tock Tuckered, the heroes work for Fly-by-Nite Aircraft Co. In Badtime Story, the place is called Peter Piper Pickled Peppers.
- In Badtime Story, there were decrepit paint jobs. In Tick Tock Tuckered, the paint jobs are new.
- In Tick Tock Tuckered, Daffy sets the time clock back a few hours, punches in and makes the alarm go off. In Badtime Story, Gabby tries to gently punch in, but has to get tough.
- In Tick Tock Tuckered, the boss calls Porky and Daffy "The Dover Boys" before he screams "Now get this! If you're late one more time, you're fired! Now get to work!", in Badtime Story, the boss calls Porky and Gabby "The Rover Boys."
- In Tick Tock Tuckered, the boss is a human character (a caricature of Clampett's immediate boss, production manager Ray Katz). In Badtime Story, the boss is a canine character and is voiced by Billy Bletcher.
- The fly scene in Badtime Story is not seen. Instead, the previous scene is extended to where Porky throws his book The Falcon, and gets hit with The Falcon Returns.
- After Porky's nightshade problem in Tick Tock Tuckered, Daffy solves the problem by shooting the moon. Gabby does not do this in Badtime Story.
- In Tick Tock Tuckered, there is an added part where Porky tells Daffy that they don't have to go to work after they see the "CLOSED" sign on the factory door. (Daffy: "Now he tells me!"), while in Badtime Story, Porky and Gabby simply see the sign and race back home without saying a word.
- At the end of Tick Tock Tuckered, Porky shoots the clock, while in Badtime Story, he hits it with a mallet.
Production notes
The working title for this cartoon was It Happened All Night (a pun on the Clark Gable It Happened One Night), but it was changed after the studio censors feared that the title would be too sexually suggestive.
