H.H. Maharajadhiraja Raj Rajeshwar Sawai Shri Marthand Rao Holkar VIII Bahadur[1] (1830 - 2 June 1849 ), was Holkar Maharaja of Indore (r. 1833 - 1834).
He was born in 1830, eldest son of Shrimant Sardar Bapu Sahib Holkar. He adopted by Gautama Bai Holkar and Krishna Bai Holkar, widow and mother of Maharaja Malhar Rao Holkar II, October 1833. He crowned on the gadi at Indore, 17 January 1834.
The adoption, however, was not acceptable to the people, for it was regarded by them as a device on the part of Gautam Bai for the purpose of retaining power in her own hands. Upon strong opposition of people and the troops, Gautama Bai was pressurized to agree to the succession of Hari Rao Holkar and subsequently Martand Rao was sent to the Deccan.
He deposed in favour of Hari Rao Holkar, 2 February 1834, and confined until his death at Poona, 2 June 1849.
