Duraisamy Geoffery Samuel Dhinakaran was an Indian evangelical preacher. He was the founder of Jesus Calls ministries, a Christian evangelical and social welfare organisation,[2] and the Karunya University.
Early life
Dhinakaran was born on July 1, 1935 at Surandai[3] in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.[2] He atteneded St. John`s college, Palayamkottai and received a BSc degree in Mathematics from Madras University in 1955.[1]
Later, he became an officer in the State Bank of India. Dhinakaran, as a young man, was supposedly grief-stricken of "poverty,sickness, unemployment and failures in life", and had decided to commit suicide by throwing himself before a speeding train. While on his way to attempt suicied, he met his uncle who was a devout Christian. The meeting is said to be crucial in the life of Dhinakaran, by means of which he supposedly repudiated his suicidal intentions and later became a devout Christian.[4][1]
Ministry
Dhinakaran began involving in evangelical activities, and after some years, on 10 October 1962, he left his job at the bank and decided to become an evangelist.[5] He began his ministries under the name "Jesus Calls Ministries". The ministry, by the time of his death in 2008, had more than 20 bases in India and abroad.[2]
He has written more than 15 books and has recorded many Christian musical albums. He also played a significant role in the formation of Seesha, a voluntary body concerned with educating underprivileged children and with assisting rural people.[2]
Death
Dhinakaran died in hospital on 20 February 2008. He is survived by his wife, Stella, and his son, Paul.[2]
