The 'sub caste ( surname, gotra )Karwal' are a Sikh, Hindu caste found in the state of Uttar Pradesh,Haryana in India. They belong to the old Royal Rajput Kshatriya community and are spread all over the Northern India, in the states of Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, UP,UK, and MP. According to their traditions, they were Rajputs of Mewar who migrated to Uttar Pradesh in the 19th Century.

A recent research links KARWAL to Rathore and Gharwal rajputs.

KARWAL is also a caste which belongs to scheduled castes and tribes of india.

The word 'Karwal' is composed of two words 'kar' meaning 'hand' in devnagri and 'wal' or 'bal' which means power. Means persons with powerful hands.
The word Karwal also means 'Sword'.

Present circumstances

The Karwal is a bold, aggressive, intellectual and educated sub-community, belonging to the Rajput clans, in Rajasthan, Punjab, MP and other northern states of India. This caste is not restricted to only Hindus, but is also common among other religions also, such as Sikhs, as Mewar rajputs remained a devotees of Guru Arjun Dev ji and Guru Gobind Singh ji.
