Kate meets Phil
Kate first met Phil Mitchell in hospital where he devoted his time as his godson, Jamie, was dying after being hit by a car driven by Martin Fowler. She proved a shoulder to cry on after Jamie's eventual death, and they began a relationship, but as she confronted him with rumours that he murdered his ex-lover, Lisa Fowler (to which he ran through the events in Portugal leading to her disappearance, admitting that he left Lisa an emotional wreck on a cliff top after emotionally manipulating her to hand over their daughter, Louise), Phil noticed a small micrphone under Kate's jumper, and she confessed that she was an undercover police officer assigned to trap him for Lisa's killing, and that his confession was being recorded by cops in a car outside the house. A fuming Phil went into a rage, but Kate told him that she'd fallen in love with him and that she wanted to quit the force to be with him. Despite initial anger, he forgave her and she set up a nail salon (SophistiKate's), while he proposed marriage to her.

Life in Walford

Kate and Phil marry

On their wedding day, her alcoholic father, Geoff, made an unwelcome presence and refused to hide his hatred for Phil, although they made up for Kate's sake. At their Queen Vic-held reception, Kate threw her bouquet of flowers, only for them to be caught by none other than Lisa! She demanded access to baby Lou, and this was eventually granted by Phil after Kate managed to soften him a little.

Marriage break-up

Despite being enemies, Phil agreed to rob a warehouse with Den Watts. After Phil got in the warehouse, Den threw down several thousand pounds of money and a gun and fled the scene, framing Phil, who was arrested for attempted robbery and assault - he was blamed for knocking out a security guard who had actually been mugged by Den. Kate was disgusted that her husband had returned to a life of crime, and ended her three-month marriage, and handed over Louise to Lisa, who fled Walford.

Departure from the Square

In 2004, Kate gained a new work partner, Chrissie Watts (Den's wife), but it wasn't long before Kate was sleeping with Den (who ironically wrecked her marriage to Phil by setting him up for robbery). When Chrissie found out the truth, she gave Kate a haircut from hell before confronting her. They later became friends again and continued to work together.

Later that year, after her father's suicide, Kate was offered a chance to work in Brighton as a copper again by her old boss. She took the offer, closed the salon, and left Walford.
