Purported name change
I removed the "Knowles" from the subject's name. The reference given was a slideshow on HuffPo, which sourced the bit about this person to this, which in turn says A source told the Daily Star newspaper.... The Daily Star being this, which is unacceptable per WP:BLPSOURCES. This is how gossip loops are started, and often we are responsible for propagating them. This should stay off the article. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 18:36, 2 July 2013 (UTC)

I would like to request that the editors please change this artist's name from "Jay-Z" to "Jay Z". He has officially removed the hyphen from his name. In support my request, please see [1], [2], [3] and [4].

The result of the move request was: no move (yet). -- tariqabjotu 15:21, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
Jay-Z → Jay Z – Numerous reports from reliable sources (NME magazine, MTV) today that the artist known as Jay-Z wishes to drop the hyphen, in future being known as Jay Z. This move is non-controversial, but the article is move-locked to non-admins, so I've added this request. -- Marek.69 talk 22:52, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- Agreed, we should move this pronto. It's been the subject of sharing and discussion all day on the Internet.[5] --Brandt Luke Zorn (talk) 22:17, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- Support move to Jay Z. Many reliable sources now confirm this.[6][7][8] --Marek.69 talk 22:26, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
- Wait! Just because a press release has received a lot press does not necessarily mean it will become "the name by which the subject is most commonly known" (WP:FULLNAME). WP:COMMONNAME states: "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's 'official' name as an article title; it prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources." See also: WP:OFFICIALNAMES. Moving the article pre-emptively without waiting for reliable sources to adopt the new name verges on crystal balling. —sroc 💬 02:03, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose - Definitely not the WP:COMMONNAME. A note about the new stylization can be mentioned in the lead, but the article title should remain "Jay-Z" no matter how he wants to style it. STATic message me! 07:09, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose, per WP:COMMONNAME. A bit too soon to move the article so preemptively. I understand that the hyphen has apparently been dropped by Jay-Z and that there's a respectable amount of media coverage about it, but the more well-known stylization still includes the hyphen. Holiday56 (talk) 10:46, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- According to the Guardian article[8] Jay Z dropped the hyphen in 2009 on The Blueprint 3, but "...no one seems to have noticed," -- Marek.69 talk 17:09, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- Not yet - Let's make sure this isn't going to be ignored like the Snoop Lion name change was. Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 17:05, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

- Support Let's keep this article factually accurate. This cannot be compared to Snoop Dogg -> Snoop Lion, as has been done by editors above, as it's a stylisation change and not a complete change of name. UKWikiGuy (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 23:38, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- It is comparable. Both are changes that affect their names. In both cases, we need to wait and see whether or not the change takes hold. Wikipedia reacts to, and does not pre-empt, what happens in the real world, not press releases. —sroc 💬 00:25, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- It is in no way comparable. Changes of name are entirely different from complete changes of stylisation. Please also note that the hyphen is only used by some media outlets anyway, this recent change is just him acknowledging this is how his name should be. UKWikiGuy (talk) 11:19, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- It is the same thing, and way too soon to be acting on and changing the name. See WP:COMMONNAME even with a google search of "Jay Z", the majority of reliable sources still use the hyphen. Do not start crying ownership when someone disagrees with you. STATic message me! 11:29, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

As far as I can tell he has hardly ever even edited the article, you are just taking it way too personal. No one is making any type of personal attacks, which is pretty obvious so stop making accusations. STATic message me! 15:15, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

- Oppose Per all of the above comments. In any case, I think (although this is only my take on it and constitutes OR, so please don't take it as fact) that Joe Levy and the journalists who read his tweet may have misinterpreted the information he was given. Jay-Z has been labelled on various music stores as JAY Z for several years now yet no one batted an eyelid, and various reliable sources have happily reported his name as Jay-Z. Quite why his label is reporting that he has dropped the hyphen now, considering that they decide how his music is labelled, and no one has requested a change since his labelling changed, is a mystery. It seems to be as if, say, there is a black cat in a completely white room that everyone can see but no one says that it's there – and only now has someone said that the cat is there. Excuse the analogy, but I'm trying to say that he has been labelled like this for a while and it's only now that someone has said "hey, his label is labelling things differently!" that people are saying a change is necessary. (The album cover for Magna Carta... Holy Grail, meanwhile, could not have been less helpful in sorting out this issue, considering the position of the black stripe.) I Am Rufus • Conversation is a beautiful thing. 14:14, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- The correct phrase is elephant in the room. This controversy is exactly why the stripe is there; to help fan the flames. From a cynical point of view, this is exactly why that album is at #1. What I will say is this; if they have labelled it on music stores for so long, why aren't we? Either he is intending to change it permanently, in which we need to wait for a bit (actions speak louder than words) or he is planning on using the terms interchangeably, in which case we have a bit of a problem. Either way; the change has been announced, so (in my opinion at least) we need to react to it.--Launchballer 16:02, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- However, we do not just act on a whim when artists make stylization changes to their names. I am extremely positive that most reliable sources in the article and online use "Jay-Z" rather than "Jay Z". Even after the announcement some sources still use "Jay-Z" which as of today is the clear WP:COMMONNAME. It is kind of interesting though that iTunes changed every "Jay-Z" album to "JAY Z" and his name has been billed as JAY Z since his featurings on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Still though, Jay-Z is the most easily recognizable common name for the artist. STATic message me! 18:23, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- It's not really a whim. I call it the straw that broke the camel's back.--Launchballer 23:46, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

- Oppose For now. As pointed out above, this is a press release or whatever, no indication that it will stick. Rightly so, Wikipedia reacts, not preempts. Let's just make a note of it in the article and wait a while. I typically !vote on move requests to match the artist's preferred naming convention but it's too soon IMO to make a call on this one. In any case, there's no difference right now between Wikipedia and the myriad of other sources that use the previous stylization. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 21:18, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- Support. I'd usually oppose, but the name change isn't much of a different. He just removed a hyphen. — Statυs (talk, contribs) 18:30, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- It should be noted that while the media is reporting that removing the hyphen is new, it isn't. It wasn't used back in 2011 for Watch the Throne either. And iTunes has had without the hyphen for as long as I can remember. — Statυs (talk, contribs) 18:34, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose Per WP:COMMONNAME, his name has been spelled with a hyphen through most of his career, a recent change is not enough to establish it as the most commonly used one. 2Flows (talk) 22:48, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose per Marcus Qwertyus. Let's see if reliable sources consistently ditch the hyphen going forward. A batch of recent news articles about his announcement isn't much to go by. Only time will tell if Snoop Lion or Metta World Peace is the better analog. --BDD (talk) 18:37, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

- JAY Z is the factually correct way of spelling his name. There is no need to attain consensus amongst editors as it is widely reported as factual. A simple google search will help you understand. UKWikiGuy (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 23:29, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
- No. Wikipedia goes by the WP:COMMONNAME used by reliable sources. At present, most reliable sources still refer to him as "Jay-Z", except for making reference to this latest story. Things may change if "Jay Z" or "JAY Z" becomes the mainstream way his name is used in reliable sources, but it isn't yet and Wikipedia does not pre-empt what may or may not happen. Refer to the #Requested move discussion above and do not push for this change in the article until a consensus is reached. —sroc 💬 01:11, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Decoded book assault charge reference
In his book Decoded, Jay-Z addresses his assault case. While he didn't apologize for his actions, he did express regret that the incident happened and attributed it to a loss of control, saying that there was no reason for him to get into a situation that put him and people who depended on him at risk. He also vowed to never get involved in a similar situation again.[citation needed]
This is referenced in the book on pages 160 through 166. The last sentence there is found nearly verbatim om page 166.

Hi folks, could we adds this early years info:
Jay-Z worked at the Kennedy Fried Chicken in his New York City neighborhood.[1] [2]
That's after he left selling and when he became straight (legit).
He did this work and in spare time was also involved in local raps.

(Source: http://www.boston.com/ae/celebrity/articles/2009/12/23/beyonce_knowles_name_change/) This is reflected on Beyonce's wikipedia page, but not Jay-Z's, which is frankly a bit sexist. – I opposed the first proposed move as premature but secondary sources have since gravitated to Jay Z's preference. Only Jay-Z: [3]; Mostly Jay Z: [4] [5]; only Jay Z: [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12]. Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 21:25, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose, perhaps this has become a more recent trend, but the most common styling throughout his career remains Jay-Z. WikiRedactor (talk) 22:23, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- Policy allows for name changes if common usage changes. WP:UCN: "If the subject of an article changes its name, it is reasonable to consider the usage since the change." It is what allows Chelsea Manning's page name to change. Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 02:35, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose — There was a recent RM where the consensus overwhelming was for not moving the article. The stylization is very inconsistent since its "change" in July 2014 and is definitely not the only way his name is stylized to this day. See [13][14] and [15] among others. Clearly the most known and WP:COMMONNAME is Jay-Z. STATic message me! 02:10, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
- So I'm not sure how I'm supposed to believe "Jay-Z" is "clearly the most known" name. I just see a bunch of cherry-picked sources. The ones I offered came from Google Alerts and represent actual usage. Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 02:35, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
- He was known as "Jay-Z" for his entire career until July 2013 and has now been "officially" known as "Jay Z" for less than a year. WP:RECENTISM applies. I provided reliable sources from today and yesterday to demonstrate that he is not just referred to as "Jay Z" now, and it is still about 50/50 in usage overall. Even if it was not, his commonly known name throughout the notable portion of his life time is Jay-Z. STATic message me! 02:49, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
- Read above^^ reply. You have not demonstrated "50/50" usage. Marcus Qwertyus (talk) 03:37, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

- Support I think essentially WP:COMMONNAME is almost toss-up right now, with inconsistency between sources and even within articles in recent press. However, what's making me lean support is that the quality of sources favouring unhyphenated (e.g. from the nom, CBS news, Washington Post) as well as their apparent quantity, though it is surprising that sources are still using both variants in the same article (e.g. UK press: Independent, BBC). Also FWIW Google trends shows a growing trend towards the unhyphenated version, and increasingly fewer searches for the hyphenated version. benmoore 23:21, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thinking more about this, maybe Google Trends isn't really distinguishing between "Jay-Z" and "Jay Z" in the same way that a Google search will return both for either query. benmoore 09:28, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. See Google Ngram --Երևանցի talk 00:39, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
- Support. Citing Ngrams, which do not cover the most recent years, is particularly misguided. I see not even the slightest reason to ignore what sources are now starting to call him when it's not even his real name. He should be able to decide the stylization of his own name, and sources are apparently following it. Red Slash 04:12, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Edit to Grammy awards
Hi, the introductory section of this page says that Jay Z has 17 Grammy wins, but according to the separate Wikipedia page for his awards, he has won 19 Grammy awards. Please make the appropriate change. 2601:9:7E00:262:3C42:619C:DE74:B235 (talk) 20:42, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
Should info on Blue Ivy be included?
Blue Ivy is a minor who is not notable other than her parents. Should her name and date of birth (even though it is well documented) be included in this article, because it would seem to contradict with Wikipedia's guidelines on this? I'm confused. Twyfan714 (talk) 01:39, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
Blue's name has been widely disseminated in the media and her date of birth too by reliable sources. I could understand how one might have a problem with Blue having her own article per WP:NOTINHERITED, but it seems fine to mention her in this article. ShawntheGod (talk) 09:46, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
PSA
I can't edit this, but in the first sentence of the politics section it says "In 2006, Jay-Z appeared with Russell Simmons in a PSA combatting racism"
There's no need to abbreviate "PSA" - it's an Americanism that a sizeable percentage of people outside America won't understand - so this should really be spelled out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.26.17.69 (talk) 10:35, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
Solange and the elevator
It may be too soon but I'm leaning towards adding a paragraph on the Solange Knowles assault, that said, I'd be interested in the opinions of others. SPACKlick (talk) 13:46, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Jay-Z's Last Name Change
Jay-Z officially changed his name to Shawn Knowles-Carter after marrying Beyonce Knowles-Carter. The last name was changed on her page and not his, please fix!

In November of 2013 he released his first fragrance, simply called "Gold by Jay Z". This amazing Men's cologne is a new standard of measure. A fragrance blended with the brightness of grapefruit and ginger warmed with cardamom, a heart of masculine vetiver and a base of rich amber and smoky myrrh, smoothed with teak wood and bourbon vanilla. - Website: http://jayzgold.com/#/home Ybeeds (talk) 17:36, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

i doubt its true that he is a member of an antisemitic "religion" that says white people are inherently evil eugenics experiments gone wrong who swarmed mecca and were banished to west asia as another article in the wiki claims.(talk)

The line from the "Early Life" section:
"The moniker is also an homage to his musical mentor, Jaz-O, as well as to the J/Z subway services that have a stop at Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn.[22]"
is inaccurate and unsupported by the cited source. That the stage name Jay-Z is an homage to the J/Z subway lines is an urban myth, and is not mentioned at all in the linked biography on AllMusic. Every external mention of it on the web links back to this erroneous wiki entry. Furthermore, it is directly contradicted by this Daily News article from 2009:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/story-origins-jay-z-myth-mta-cuts-article-1.435344
I'd like to request that the second half of that line be stricken.
