Madonna's upcoming thirteenth studio album will be the follow-up album by American singer-songwriter Madonna. Production on the album started in late 2013 and has been in progress as far as 2014.
Background
In 2011, Madonna had signed to Interscope Records. Through this contract, Madonna and Live Nation signed a three-album deal with Interscope Records, who announced that they would marked and distribute her twelfth studio album.[1][2] Then in March 2012, Madonna released her long-awaited studio album MDNA which yeiled four singles; "Give Me All Your Luvin'", "Girl Gone Wild", "Masterpiece" and "Turn Up the Radio".[3] The album was met with lukewarm reception from music critics, but became Madonna's lowest selling studio album, selling over two million copies worldwide.[4][5][6] To conclude the promotion, Madonna went on her MDNA World Tour, which became a critical success and grossed more than $305.1 million in ticket sales for 88 sold-out shows.[7]
In late 2013, media sources reported that Madonna had started work on her thirteenth studio album. In January 2014, the Daily Mail reported that Madonna had worked with British soul artist Adele, where they reported that they wrote "ballads" for each other for each of their album.[8] Media reports throughout January 2014 rumored the activity of the album. Finally, when Madonna was opening her latest Hard Candy gym in Toronto, Madonna confirmed work on the album.[9] She commented "Yes, plans are in the works already [...] Don't ask me with who - it's a secret. Top secret."[9]
Production
Throughout 2014, Madonna became more interested with online social media and regularly posted photos of her progress on the album. Reports than surfaced that Madonna was working with British singer-songwriter Natalia Kills and Swedish DJ Avicii.[10] In March, Madonna confirmed work with Avicii on Instagram, commenting "Doing some house work after 4 hours of sleep which is why i cant spell! On my way to the studio to work with Avicii!"[11] The duo had previously worked together at Ultra Music Festival in 2012. Madonna confirmed on Instagram that she was working with Kills, captioning "Working the midnight shift with Natalia Kills. 2 girls on a couch..........don"t it taste like Holy Water?"[12] It was later confirmed that Martin Kierszenbaum was in production with the album.[10] In an interview with Paste Magazine, Kills told the magazine that other collaborators Blood Diamonds, Diplo, MNEK and DJ Dahi were to feature on the studio album and had written more than eight songs for the album.[13] Speaking on her writing process, she said "She writes incredible lyrics, sings beautiful melodies, but most of all she is so fucking funny [...] Madonna’s dancers play my music during her rehearsals and workouts every week."[13]
American DJ and producer Diplo announced his involvement with the album in September.[14] When asked specifically about Diplo and his involvement in the album, Madonna's manager Guy Oseary told Billboard, "She's currently in the studio with Diplo and having a lot of fun." Diplo commented "amazing, smashes." "I got really lucky because she's been really understanding and open to my ideas. And she's like, 'I hate sleeping…'"[14] That same month, Madonna uploaded a picture on Instagram with her holding a sign with the caption "Alicia", which was rumored to be American singer Alicia Keys. This was eventually confirmed by her.[15] Confirmed to be the pianist of the new track, she said "It was good. I was in here doing a meeting or something and she was working with Diplo. They were like, “Oh, maybe you can play some piano on this thing.” And I was like, “Alright. I’ll try. If you hate it you can take it off.” It was just like that, casual and cool."[16] Disclosure were then rumored to feature on the album after Madonna at New York’s Governors Ball back in June. However, the band told reports that this was not true.[15] In part of the album, The London Community Church Gospel Choir are to feature in the album, as are MoZella, Ariel Rechtshaid, Toby Gad and Symbolyc One.[15]
In October 2014, American artist Ariel Pink confirmed to FasterLouder.com that he was working with Madonna on the album.[17] He said "Interscope are calling me to help write Madonna’s record [...]". Despite the announcement, he was critical towards Madonna's record by calling it a "downward slide" and saying "They need something edgy. They need songwriting. She can’t just have her Avicii, her producers or whatever, come up with a new techno jam for her to gyrate to and pretend that she’s 20 years old. They actually need songs. I’m partly responsible for that return-to-values thing,”"[17] Backlash had contributed towards his statements, to which British singer Grimes said that his comments were "delusional misogyny" and "emblematic".[18] Madonna and her manager Guy Oseary had commented "Madonna and I [Guy Oseary] have never heard of [Ariel Pink]. The label may have reached out but M has no interest in working with mermaids".[18]
Material
Throughout her Instagram account, Madonna has frequently hashtagged the words "#rebelheart", "#livingforlove", "#unapologeticbitch" and "#unapologetic", all names which were rumored to be song titles or the album title. On her Facebook account, more speculation occurred when she posted a picture of her with the title "Unapologetic Bitch" in the foreground.
In December 2014, two of Madonna's songs; "Rebel Heart" and "Wash All Over Me" were leaked online.[19][20] In response to the leak, Madonna uploaded a photo via Instagram with a smashed iPod, commenting "This broken ipod is a symbol of my broken heart! That my music has been stolen and leaked! I have been violated as a human and an artist! #fuckedupshit"[21] Oseary said via Twitter "I would be grateful to any Madonna fans that can assist us in finding those responsible for the leak. We appreciate your help."[22] Later on the same month, the entire album, which the title has now been speculated as Unapologetic Bitch or Iconic, was leaked online before its scheduled release date with a rumored tracklist.[23][24] Madonna responded that the piracy act was a "form of terrorism" and "artistic rape", and confirmed that the tracks are unfinished demos, with some of them not featuring on the forthcoming effort.[25]

During an interview on the Australian tv show “The Riff”, Diplo confirmed that the song "Living for Love" will be the first single from the album in early 2015, where the music video will be shot in New York City.[26][27]
