Joshu-ya Brasserie is a modern sushi brasserie that serves edo-style sushi, in addition to California style tapas with contemporary American influences. Joshuya Brasserie is the first retsaruant created under Kwon Hospitality Group. The restaurant is located in Berkeley, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. The owner and Executive Chef of Joshu-ya is Jason Kwon. The restaurant emphasizes sustainable and seasonally driven food.

Located in the Telegraph Avenue Shopping District, Joshuya Sushi is one of the oldest landmark restaurants in the Bay Area. Having been in operation for more than thirty years, Joshuya is till the number one rated Japanese restaurant in the East Bay according to the Zagat Guide.[1] Other notable honors in 2014 include Best Sushi by the Daily Californian[2]; Top Ten Sushi Restaurants in the Berkeley by Yelp[3]; Diner’s Choice Award for Best Small Plates by OpenTable[4]; Top 10 Best Burger in the Bay Area by Zagat Guide[5].


History

Founded in 1978 by Chef Kazuo Negishi as Joshuya Sushi Boat, it was one of the first sushi restaurants in the Berkeley area. IIn 2011, Rising Chef of the Year nominee, Jason Kwon, took ownership and launched Joshuya Brasserie. The restaurant is located at 2441 Dwight Way on historic Telegraph Avenue. In 2011 Jason Kwon took over ownership and launched Joshuya Brasserie. Located at 2411 Dwight Way on historic Telegraph Avenue, the restaurant is a longstanding establishment in the heart of Telegraph and the Southside UC Berkeley campus community.

After being nominated as the Rising Chef of the Year by StarChefs in 2011-12, Jason Kwon was approached by Charles Pinot to publish “The Joshuya Cookbook” which is set to release December 2014.[6]


Cuisine

The food is mainly Japanese and American with modern Californian influences. Joshuya serves seasonal and weekend menus that reflect its local and sustainable food sources. Along with seasonal items, Joshuya offers a prix-fixe menu for $80 and $120, as well as an omakase for $80
