Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment is the first sequel of six in the Police Academy series of comedic police movies about misfit cops who try to keep law and (dis)order in town. This sequel was directed by Jerry Paris.

Steve Guttenberg reprises his role as Mahoney, the class clown of police academy; veteran actor George Gaynes as Commandant Eric Lassard; former American football player Bubba Smith as Hightower; Marion Ramsay as the very quiet voice but loudmouth Hooks; David Graf as Officer Eugene Tackleberry; and Michael Winslow as Officer Larvell Jones, all return from the original.

In this sequel, the police academy grads have graduated and now are let loose into the city, trying to help Lassard's brother, Capt. Lassard, played by WKRP in Cincinnati alum, Howard Hesseman, protect the town from an obnoxious gang led by Zed played by Bobcat Goldthwait. Art Metrano also joins the cast as Lt. Mauser, as does Julie Brown.
