2012 ranking

For Stepho-wrs, who reverted an edit that listed this company as the 9th largest producer of autos in the Chinese market in 2012: GAC is the ninth largest overall but also the sixth largest in terms of passenger vehicles. You can see from the above-linked chart that there are three major headings in addition to a heading for the column that reads, "1, 2, 3..." These headings are: passenger vehicles, light-duty commercial, and heavy-duty commercial. If you look at the second column from the left, the passenger vehicle column, you'll see that GAC (广汽) appears in the row labeled "6." However, it does not appear in any other column. As GAC does not produce light- or heavy-duty commercial vehicles, this makes sense. Therefore, if you take into account the total production of all Chinese vehicles makers, GAC is not the sixth largest in terms of production volume. If you look for each of the major automakers in each of the columns and sum the values, you'll find that GAC, lacking any commercial production, is the ninth-largest. I can understand how this can be somewhat confusing especially because the names of the automakers do not remain constant across columns. For example, take a look at Chang'an; it's listed as number 4 for passenger cars, number six for light-duty, and number eight for heavy-duty. However, it's name is slightly different from one column to the next reflecting the fact that different divisions of the company make consumer and commercial offerings. Okay, I see it now. The 6th largest car manufacturer was obvious but having to total up and sort manufacturers by hand wasn't so obvious.  Stepho  talk  05:23, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
