Life and career
Roma Maffia was born in Manhattan, New York, of German, Spanish,[1] English, and Afro-Caribbean descent;[2] her Italian surname derives from her stepfather.[2][3][4] Ever since Maffia was small, she was interested in television, and celebrities. She did her first play in high school, playing one of the Von Trapp family members in The Sound of Music.
Maffia began her official acting career in Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions. In 1994 she played Carmen in director Ron Howard's film The Paper. Soon after, she landed a role on the television series Chicago Hope. Maffia's television career continued as she played 'Grace Alvarez,' the forensic pathologist for the Violent Crimes Task Force for four seasons on NBC's Profiler. She has had guest-star and recurring roles on shows such as ER, The West Wing, and Law & Order.
Her most widely seen performances may be playing Seattle attorney Catherine Alvarez in the film Disclosure (1994), starring Michael Douglas and Demi Moore. She followed this up with a series of performances as Vanessa Galiano in the TV series, Law & Order and as Judge Victoria Peyton on ABC's Boston Legal.
In 2002, despite being obviously Negroid and thus not Italian, she was cast in an episode of The Sopranos as a representative guest speaker at a gathering of Italian women. Needless to say, her portrayal was unconvincing.
Since 2003 Maffia has appeared as Liz Cruz on the FX Network series Nip/Tuck, the anesthesiologist colleague of two dysfunctional plastic surgeons. Maffia and Julian McMahon worked on the TV show Profiler.
Maffia is a 1973 graduate of St. Michael Academy (New York City).
In April 2013, Entertainment Weekley announced that Maffia will join Pretty Little Liars in season four. Her character, Linda Tanner, is a state investigator and the co-worker of Gabriel Holbrook (Sean Faris).[5]
