Dr. Vipul R. Patel, MD, FACS is a world-renowned surgeon specializing in robotic surgery for prostate cancer. He is the founder and Medical Director of the Florida Hospital Global Robotics Institute[1], founder and Vice President of the Society of Robotic Surgery, and founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Robotic Surgery[2]. In February, 2016 he performed his 9,000th robotic-assisted prostatectomy, the most performed by any surgeon to date.[3]

Education and Early Career

Dr. Patel received his medical degree in 1995 from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and completed his residency and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida.

After graduation he established a robotic surgery program in a large private practice in Birmingham, Alabama. A few years later, he left private practice to establish a robotic program at Ohio State University. He served as the Director of the Center for Robotic and Computer-assisted Surgery at The Ohio State University Medical Center for three years, where he was also an Associate Clinical Professor of Urology and Associate Professor of Bioinformatics.

In January, 2008 Dr. Patel left Ohio and moved to Florida where he became Medical Director of the Global Robotics Institute at Florida Hospital Celebration Health.

Major Career Events

Dr. Patel credits the use of robotic assisted surgery with helping surgeons achieve better surgical outcomes with the "trifecta" of cancer control, continence and sexual function[4][5].

In 2012 Dr. Patel founded the International Prostate Cancer Foundation, a charitable institution with the goals of promoting research in testing for genetic predisposition to prostate cancer, patient and physician education, and global screening for early detection of prostate cancer. Dr. Patel serves as chairman of the foundation.[6] NBA Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson, a prostate cancer survivor who underwent robotic surgery performed by Dr. Patel, serves on the board.

On February 2016 Dr. Pate performed his 9000th robotic prostatectomy.

Academic Career

Dr. Patel continues to be involved in training surgeons on robotic technologies. He leads the robotic training team at the Nicholson Center for Surgical Advancement, is a Professor of Urology at the University of Central Florida, and a Clinical Associate Professor of Urology at Nova Southeastern University.

He wrote the first textbook on

He has helped to establish and train robotic surgery units around the world. In 2008 he trained the first Russian robotic surgery team and performed the first robotic prostatectomy in Russia, for which he was inducted into the Russian Academy of Sciences[[1]]. has been awarded these honorary academic titles:

  • Professor of Urology, University of Milan
  • Clinical Associate Professor of Urology, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Nova SE University
  • Professor of Urology, University of the State of Rio de Janeiro and Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro
  • Professor of Urology, Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS)
  • Professor of Urology, the Asian School of Urology
  • Professor of Urology, College of Medicine, Ricardo Palma University, Lima, Peru
  • Clinical Invited Professor, Department of Urology, Korea University Hospital

Screening for Early Detection of Prostate Cancer

Dr. Patel is a strong advocate of routine screening for early detection of prostate cancer. In May 2012, the United States Preventive Services Task Force issued a guideline stating that healthy men should not get routine PSA tests. Because PSA levels can be elevated from causes other than prostate cancer, the task force felt that false positives would lead to unnecessary treatment which could have serious side effects[7]. Dr. Patel started a petition on Change.org requesting that the task force review their decision, noting that the mortality rate from prostate cancer had dropped by 40% since the introduction of PSA testing. The petition gathered more than 5700 signatures, and in March 2013, the South Carolina House passed a resolution petitioning the United States Congress to seek withdrawal of the task force recommendations against PSA screening.

While campaigning for routine PSA screening, he has also worked to improve the accuracy of tests. He was the first in Florida to use an additional blood test called the Prostate Health Index, which has been shown in one clinical study to reduce unnecessary biopsies from false positives by 31%[8].

He also played a role in research into using RNA molecules found in the urine of cancer patients as a prognostic marker for prostate cancer. He sponsored the study, through the International Prostate Cancer Foundation, and provided the tissues from cancer patients[9]. Researchers at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute compared the urine and the tissue of patients with prostate cancer to the urine and the tissue of men without prostate cancer. They found that certain RNA molecules, easily detected in urine, were more common in men with prostate cancer. The goal of the research is to develop a less invasive, faster and more accurate test for prostate cancer.[10]
