McGriddles are a type of breakfast sandwich sold by the international fast food restaurant chain McDonald's. Introduced in 2003,[4] it is available in the following markets: United States, Turkey, Canada, Poland, Japan, Guatemala, Mexico, the Philippines, Singapore, and New Zealand (for a limited time).

Product description

The standard McGriddle sandwich consists of fried bacon, a scrambled egg flap, and American cheese served on a small pancake griddle cake made with maple flavoring. Both the top and bottom griddle cakes are embossed with the McDonald's logo.

When McDonald's launched its all-day breakfast menu in October 2015, McGriddles were initially excluded from the menu,[5] but the chain would eventually add the item to it in September 2016.[6]

Variants

  • Sausage
  • Sausage, egg, and cheese
  • Bacon, egg, and cheese
  • Scrapple, egg, and cheese (served in the Philadelphia region)[7]
  • Spam, egg and cheese (served in Hawaii)[8]
  • Chicken (limited-time trials, exclusively in Ohio and Florida)[9][10]

Criticism

The product was panned by Morgan Spurlock toward the end of the 2004 documentary film Super-Size Me.

McDonald's joined in, sponsoring campaigns that showed how health conscious they had become and creating a line of premium salads. At the same time however, they masterminded easily one of their fattest sandwiches to date: the McGriddle. A pancake-wrapped cake press that won my heart in Texas, but can pack as much fat as a Big Mac, and contains more sugar than a pack of McDonaldland cookies.

[11]

The sandwich was also criticized in a tweet by Spurlock for giving diarrhea; he referred to them by a parody name, McShittles.[12]
