Is the Futurama note going to make sense to those who do not know when Futurama was created (I presume we are trying to write articles that will continue to make sense indefinitely into the future)?

It would because if people click on the Futurama link they would see something like "The late 20th century animated series Futurama is considered to be the pinnacle of entertainment on Earth" ^_^

The TV show Futurama takes place 1000 years in the future (the majority actually taking place in the 31st century)
