Career

Early Years

Growing up in Bedford England UK, from an early age Danni Nicholls always had the sound of music around her with constant house parties at her grandparents place, parties in halls or with her family in London with genres that would range from American roots music to rock n roll, from country and western to soul. Her grandmother would often talk about the likes of the Grand ole Opry, so the seeds were sown at a very early age. At 16 Danni inherited, from her uncle Heathcliffe a 1963 Burns London electric guitar that family legend has it once belonged to that most American of early English rockers Billy Fury although initially she played saxophone but felt the need to write songs so turned to the guitar. As soon as Danni knew two chords she was writing her own songs, and soon gigging at school assemblies, even selling home-made albums of her songs to school friends, family and teachers. Danni’s love of 50s America, rock n roll, Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline suddenly coalesced and a path opened in front of her. A year studying songwriting and music business in Brighton England UK followed, but more important to her musical education in the city was what she learned from promoting her own music nights in several venues including running and promoting ‘Americana Unplugged’ every Sunday for two years at a little Brighton pub called ‘The Foundry’

2009 - 2012

During this period Danni extensively toured around the UK playing in many small venues to promote her two EPs Heavy Shoes (2009) and Time (2012)

2012 - 2014

Danni recorded and released her first full studio album A Little Redemption in Nashville Tennessee at the Yackland Studios East Nashville. The producer was Chris Donohue who Danni had previously met when Chris was playing bass for Emmylou Harris at The Albert Hall in the UK and subsequently invited Danni to get in touch with him. The team included engineer and mixer Stephen Leiweke and musicians Will Kimbrough, Al Perkins, Billy Livsey, Jordan Hamlin, Brigitte DeMeyer and Butterfly Boucher amongst others. First Cuckoo of Spring from the album was featured in the TV series Sons of Anarchy (season 7 2014). [2]

2015 - 2016

Danni recorded and released her second studio album Mockingbird Lane, again at the Yackland Studio East Nashville with producer Chris Donohue and sound engineer/mixer Stephen Leiweke. As with Danni's first album mastering was done by Alex McCullough. Musicians included Will Kimbrough, Ralph T Lofton, Brandy Zdan, Chris Donohue and Stephen Leiweke amongst others.

2017

Danni's second studio album Mockingbird Lane was nominated at The Americana Music Association UK 2017 Awards [3] for UK Album of the Year and performed her song Beautifully Broken in front of notables such as Van Morrison, Jools Holland, Imelda May and Timothy B Schmit at the St John's Church in Hackney London. Later in the year, Danni performed an official showcase at The Americana Music Association AmericanaFest 2017 in Nashville [4]. In addition to her own headline tours in the UK, Danni performed at festivals in the UK and Denmark, notably several sets including the Women's Circle (also featuring Kaia Kater from Canada, Tami Neilson from New Zealand along with Laura Mo and Dorthe Gerlach both from Denmark) at the Tonder Festival in Denmark. Danni also opened as support for Lucinda Williams at the De La Warr Pavillion Bexhill-on-Sea [5] for one of only two shows in the UK and completed 28 dates on a full UK with Shakin' Stevens on his Echoes of our Time tour at venues such as O2 Shepherd's Bush London, Opera House Blackpool and Royal Concert Hall Glasgow[6]. Danni released a live album The Vintage TV Recordings with a launch show in April at St Pancras Old Church London, the album made up of songs recorded and aired by Vintage TV UK from three sessions: Live Sessions from Dingwalls Camden London that featured Danni with a full band, Live At The Water Rats London supporting Toyah Willcox as a duo with guitarist Max Milligan and Live With from The Metropolis Studios, again as a duo with Max Milligan. In April 2017, Danni was featured as Artist of the Month by Caffe Nero.

2018

Danni began the year by being nominated for UK Artist of the Year at The Americana Music Association UK 2018 Awards[7] and this was later followed with a nomination for Best Country/Folk Act for the Unsigned Music Association 2018 Awards[8]. Danni performed an official showcase at the Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City[9] followed by a support tour for The Secret Sisters[10] in the UK and Ireland and festival appearances at Black Deer Festival and Long Road Festival[11][12]. During the summer, Danni returned to Nashville to record her new studio album The Melted Morning, planned for release in spring 2019, at the Moxe Studio with producer Jordan Brooke Hamlin and featuring artists The Secret Sisters and Kyshona Armstrong
