He was probably born in [[Utrecht]] where he appears in the archives under the name Munnekus or Munniks. He was a pupil of [[Abraham Bloemaert]] and [[Pauwel van Overbeeck]], and became a master in the [[Utrecht Guild of Saint Luke]] in 1627 or 1633 and its dean in 1643.<ref name=RKD>[https://rkd.nl/en/explore/artists/372712 Hendrick Munniks] in the [[RKD]]</ref> The same year he moved to The Hague as court painter of [[Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange]].
<ref name=RKD/> He is known for paintings in the manner of [[Caravaggio]], and he may have died in the Hague, where he was last recorded as a member of the [[Confrerie Pictura]] in 1644.<ref name=RKD/>

Among his famous paintings was a Venus image that was painted for Prince Frederick Henry's behalf, and a great starting the gathering of the Hague [[schutterij]], sold at auction 1648.<ref name=RKD/>
