Angus & Julia Stone are a brother sister duo from Newport on Sydney's northern Beaches, Australia. They create heartfelt, emotional folk, blues music that says a lot without trying.

Their first EP Chocolates and Cigarettes was released in 2006 in Australia with record label EMI and in the UK with independent label Independiente, home to other bands Travis and Gomez.

Angus and Julia’s decision to collaborate was taken at the beginning 2006. Prior to that both had performed as solo artists, principally at open mic nights, but with each using the other as a backing partner. In terms of composing the material, they write on their own, then work together on structure and harmonies.

Both Angus and Julia have distinctive vocal styles, perhaps best described by The Sydney Morning Herald’s Bernard Zuel; “Her voice has a fractured feel like Jollie Holland; his has a smoke-on-the-beach drawl”. And a UK journalist Johnny Sharp said “Most impressive though are the songs - simple but blindingly effective acoustic compositions, warm boy-girl harmonies and delicate, less-is-more arrangements. Resistance is surely futile."

This homespun ethic extends to their videos and artwork too. Mitch Connelly the bands drummer also acts as the band’s official photographer and his brother IOSHVA looks after their website and artwork. The band also directs their own videos along with their friends at Nippard Productions.

2006 saw Angus and Julia play festivals across Australia, The Great Escape and Splendour in the Grass. They then moved over to the UK to play shows and release their EP.

Whilst in the UK in the latter part of the year, they were invited into Chris Potter’s studio (The Verve/Richard Ashcroft) to record. In the meantime Fran Healy from UK band Travis who is a label mate, heard their debut EP and also invited them to his house to record. These recordings will be released in 2007 on a second EP.
