Whirlwind Recordings is a jazz record label that was founded by Michael Janisch in 2010.[1][2]

History

Michael Janisch, a bassist, founded the label in London, England, in 2010 as a way to release his music.[3][4] One of his models was Sirocco Music, which was closing around the same time.[2] He started Whirlwind because he was unhappy with the options available to a musician who wanted to sign with a record label.[2] He wanted "full artistic control" over his music and of the acts he signed.[2] About the name he said, "If you use a whirlwind as a visual analogy of the music we release, the whirlwind would be this big tornado of jazz and improvised music, which today features an infinite amount of different influences and sub-genres."[2] After releasing two or three albums during the first year, he realized he had to change his business model to be profitable, and this meant having a second job as the manager of a label and signing other musicians.[2] Whirlwind has released albums by John Escreet, Ingrid Jensen, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Walter Smith III, Matthew Stevens, and Jeff Williams.[2]

Whirlwind Festival

In October 2013, Whirlwind Recordings held the Whirlwind Festival.[5] The festival ran from October 10–12 at Kings Place in London. Among its 18 bands and 86 musicians. were Andre Canniere, Greg Osby, Mike Gibbs, Norma Winstone, Robert Mitchell, and Logan Richardson.[6][7]
