The State of Norderland (hereinafter “Norderland”) is a sovereign state located between Croatia and Serbia on the west bank of the Danube River. On some maps, this area is referred to as “Pockets 0,2,3,4,5,6,7,8.” The nearest towns are Zmajevac (Croatia) and Bački Monoštor (Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia). |

This parcel of land came into existence due to a border dispute between Croatia and Serbia. This area is not claimed by Croatia, Serbia, nor any other nation or private entity. Furthermore, it remained unclaimed since the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991. In fact, for many decades, it has been uninhabited and no claim was ever made to this piece of land. It was therefore Terra Nullius – a no man’s land – until Bernard Typhis and Diana Haus proclaimed it as the State of Norderland on 17 April 2015. Norderland has set its boundary with ample margin from neighbouring countries to ensure that it does not infringe upon the territory of Croatia or Serbia. The total area is approximately 4 km² and is now the third smallest sovereign state, after the Vatican, Liberland and Monaco. The Norderland was a historic territory, set on the northwestern edge of East Frisia immediately next to the Wadden Sea off North Germany, which embraced a wide area around the town of Norden. The Norderland was bordered in the east by the Harlingerland and in the south by the Brokmerland.
Today, Norderland refers to the area containing the borough of Norden, the collective municipality of Hage, Großheide and Dornum. Occasionally the term Norderland is also used to refer to the territory of the former district of Norden. Historically, however, this also included parts of Bro(o)kmerland and Emsigerland.

History
