Bishop Matthias was born in Hong Kong and lived in Taiwan for several years. He was educated in the United Stated and Canada, where he lived for around 31 years.

After obtaining his degree of Bachelor of Arts from the [[University of Toronto]], Matthias furthered his studies at [[Wycliffe College, Toronto]] and he graduated with a master of Divinity degree.

He is married and has two adult daughters. He has a wide-range of personal interests such as travelling, swimming and violin.

Matthias was ordained to the diaconate in 1990 in the Diocese of Toronto, Anglican Church of Canada, he was ordained to the sacred order of priesthood in the following year.

Fr Matthias was appointed the Dean of [[St John's Cathedral (Hong Kong)|St John's Cathedral]], Hong Kong in July 2012 and officially installed on 13 October 2012. He was consecrated as Bishop Co-adjutor of the Anglican Diocese of Hong Kong Island on 3rd October 2020. He will assume office of the diocesan bishop when Archbishop Paul retires at the end of 2020. The Enthronement service is scheduled to be held on 2nd January 2021.
