Harriet Cains (born 17 September 1993) is an English actress, best known for her role as Jem Walker in In the Flesh.
Career
Harriet Cains trained as an actress at the drama club Circle Up for three years. Cains later trained in The Television Workshop, during which she was cast in short films roles, as well as Hollyoaks Later. During her time in the Television Workshop, Cains became aware of auditions for the British TV series In the Flesh. She auditioned in Manchester and was cast as Jem Walker.[1] To prepare for the role, Cains watched documentaries about post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety, while also talking with people who had experienced these illnesses. She wanted to portray them in a realistic way.[2]
In 2015 Cains was cast as Louisa Blackwell in Safe House.[3] Since 2016 she has appeared in various supporting roles, including Lizzie Hallum for the crime series Vera[4] and Jade Hopkirk in Line of Duty in early 2017.[5]
At the beginning of July 2017, it was announced that Cains would become a series regular in the second season of the ITV/Netflix series Marcella,[6] as single mum Gail Donovan. The second series began airing in February 2018, with Cains appearing in six episodes.
Cains was a contributing performer of all-female comedy collective Major Labia [7] until 2017.
In 2019, Cains began filming the role of Philipa Featherington for Shondaland's upcoming 2020 Netflix series Bridgerton, based on the books by Julia Quinn.[8]
